Edging the soundboard with shell is costly and time-consuming, so add $250. Abalone or paua can be used, depending on personal taste. I have also used gold mother-of-pearl. The standard rosette is a 3/16 wide ring of abalone and a slightly larger ring of black-white-black wood. Custom rosette designs are also accepted, usually varying from $50 to $100 depending on complexity. I make two basic body styles, a Dreadnaught. And a Small Jumbo. Which is the curvier deep-waisted shape. A Venetian cutaway is available for either style. The Small Jumbo SJ and its cutaway version SJ-C , is always voiced for rich overtones and sustain. The voice tends to be a little quieter and less brassy than a dreadnaught, but in no way is it wimpy or plunky. The closest standard I can compare it to is a triple-O. Visit the Models Gallery. Sitka spruce is the standard high-quality wood for steel strings. Used by default. Englemann spruce is often (but not necessarily) a little less stiff, which is a negative,. Englemann tends to be paler and to stay that way, while Sitka will darken more with exposure to sunlight. Adirondack (Red) spruce has the most highly desirable acoustic properties, but cosmetically nice pieces are hard to find and will add to the cost of the guitar. That way I could check out all the new guitars. I can recall when the store had this beautiful guitar that I had ever seen. It was a Gibson SG Custom. In my opinion, the SG shape has to be one of the most original guitar designs. It was shaped like no other guitar at the tim. E Gibson gave it the designation SG which stood for solid guitar.
