Skip to main content. Usually, making our homes more energy-efficient has to be done bit by bit. We’re not often able to do a total refit. So when something has to be replaced or altered, we should seize the opportunity, and do it better. Better than just today’s standards. It makes sense, particularly when what we put in may be there for 20, or 50, years. For energy use and energy generation, see Energy section ). Building insulation and decorating materials. We moved house back in October last year, and one of the things that had been playing on my mind was how to board a loft in a new build house. Both of these solutions are bad! What is a Raised Loft Floor? For insulation to work as intended it needs to be protected. Loft insulation should be at least 270mm deep to work and prevents 25% of a home s heat escaping through the roof. Ceiling joists are only 100mm high therefore the insulation projects at least 170mm above the timber. When insulation is 270mm deep it covers the timber joists making it very hazardous to move around and impossible to place anything on the insulation without damaging it.

What is a Raised Loft Floor? The Raised Loft Floor (RLFS) is a unique modular system with standard components that are strong, lightweight and simple to install. The essential aspect is that it forms a raised adjustable beam that goes across the joists allowing for variations in joist spacing but also works precisely with 1,220mm long standard loft boards and 600mm wide insulation rolls. Spacing between joists vary considerably making it impossible for a non- adjustable system to work.
