Log base 2: Another definition of science ...
http://logbase2.blogspot.com/2006/05/another-definition-of-science.html
Monday, May 29, 2006. Another definition of science . A body of knowledge collected an nurtured by experts according to neutral, objective, and universal standards.". That's from an entertaining article with the staggeringly unoriginal title "The Management Myth" in the June issue of The Atlantic (which was kindly passed on to me by Brother Hrab). Hmmm, doesn't strike me as a great definition. Who are these "experts"? And what are these "neutral, objective, and universal standards"? While this epidemiolo...
Log base 2: Chance and inevitability
http://logbase2.blogspot.com/2011/01/chance-and-inevitability.html
Tuesday, January 11, 2011. In today's issue of the Los Angeles Times, Michael Shermer wrote about the rush "to find the deep underlying causes of shocking events", with reference to the shooting in Tucson, Arizona and the recent mass bird deaths. Shermer made some good points, but parts of his argument were flawed. For example, he cited statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health to argue that unbalanced people are not uncommon, and. Shermer finishes his piece as follows:. As often as not, ev...

Sunday, December 17, 2006. Ok, so Log Base 2 has been in hibernation lately. So what has reactivated this blog? Anti-viral tissues, that's what! At the drugstore today, I saw a box of Kleenex Anti-Viral tissues. Yikes, I thought: Kleenex impregnated with Tamiflu. Well, to be honest I can't tell for sure . Here's how the manufacturers of Kleenex describe their product:. Incidentally, the image above depicts the RSV virus. (And double-incidentally, it bugs me that in that last sentence, the word "virus...
Log base 2: Be the change?
http://logbase2.blogspot.com/2014/11/be-change.html
Saturday, November 08, 2014. Be the change you wish to see in the world"- It's no wonder this saying (let’s call it BTC) has become so popular. From its sense of immediacy to its spiritual turn of phrase, BTC hits all the right notes. It doesn't hurt that it is commonly attributed to Gandhi, even though, as writer Brian Morton. Has noted, the closest Gandhi came to BTC was a passage including these words: "If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.". You can’t be less gr...

Statistical concepts in presenting data | Lies and Stats
https://liesandstats.wordpress.com/2009/02/18/statistical-concepts-in-presenting-data
Statistical concepts in presenting data. On 18 February 2009. Finally someone has written a text something like Tufte’s Visual Display of Quantitative Information. But specifically for statistics. Rafe M. J. Donahue. Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Gave a seminar course on presenting statistical data at a meeting of the American Statistical Associtation (ASA). And will be giving a similar course in April 2009. The current version of Donahue’s text is a 100 pages [PDF]. Show the atoms; show the data.
But you can show equivalence | Lies and Stats
https://liesandstats.wordpress.com/2008/11/07/but-you-can-show-equivalence
But you can show equivalence. On 7 November 2008. Hopefully it’s clear from previous posts that you can’t prove the null. And you can’t use power to build support for the null. And this confusion is one reason I don’t like the term “accepting” the null hypothesis. The question remains, however, of what you can do with a hypothesis that fits what you would normally consider a “null”, but that you would actually like to prove. Is the subject for a future blog post). What’s the difference? 9654; 5 Responses.

Bottombracket: December 2008
http://bbracket.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 17, 2008. Ride the Boards of Glory You Fool. The good ole days of track racing: wooden rims on wooden boards. 2008 Olympics - Spanish Madison team: Juan Llaneras. Ah track racing, the original form of cycle-sport. It conjures thoughts of chamois creme, 225 lbs psi 18c tubular tires. And balls-out tactical sprints in elimination races. Come the depths of winter in northern climes, and track is really all there is left. I can let go of it, see? That's what I'm telling you, anyway. At cr...
Bottombracket: August 2008
http://bbracket.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 27, 2008. So I spent half of August glued to a television. A remarkable achievement any way you slice it, really, and one rather new to me. Formerly, I subscribed to the anti-spectacular philosophy of Guy Debord. And alienation in such mediatized. Pseudo-festivals of staged importance. Olympic Gold: a vacuous bore from start to finish delivered with an unrelenting nationalist narrative. Canadian athletes being interviewed in English with an instant re-capitulation en francais. Races wer...
Bottombracket: Icycle '09 Dufferin Grove Park Rink
http://bbracket.blogspot.com/2009/02/icycle-09-2-dufferin-grove-park.html
Monday, February 23, 2009. Icycle '09 Dufferin Grove Park Rink. Les pistards sur glace: Panama Jack vs. Pete 'Bones' Breward. The ice race played out in all its icy. Glory (Jim 'Ice bear' Kuz. Chases Ted Ingram in the final. Eventually Kuz. Crashed on a flat tire in a corner and took Ingram down with him.) There were lots of 'cross machines in attendance. Good weather, fine times and a bit of a crowd too! Is that Panama Jack? S Sontag said photos replace memory - seems that this 'memory' is quite unclear.

Thursday, January 29, 2009. What can be said? It is the end of an era. Last pro bicycle race ended in triumph in Berlin on 27 January 2009. He and Robart. Went into the final night of the Berlin Six in the lead and stayed ahead of Bruno Risi. The Swiss powerhouse defending champions. Was it by gentlemen's. Very possibly, but who cares: a class act went out in style in his home town in front of 13 000 Berliners and other fans. In the days of Eddie Merckx. For the record, the lovely photo ( Velo. People al...
Bottombracket: Frame of Cuba.
http://bbracket.blogspot.com/2009/02/frame-of-cuba.html
Thursday, February 12, 2009. This brand new machine I found in Cuba in the first house I stayed in. The seat stays are attached to nothing, presumably to take a bolt that would secure/be part of a cargo rack along with the frame itself. Like everything else it Cuba it managed to look old even though it was new. It takes Communist industry to pull that off (I believe). You are doing really great. Carry on; I will come back soon. Bottombracket: June 2008
http://bbracket.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 24, 2008. CMWC '08 - It happened here. Somebody had a friend at FedEx. Carrying these things were. Hayward, that's for you.). The floating checkpoint had victims. Hayward (no-helmet man) gives main race instructions - "Don't be an asshole, don't ride like an asshole; assholes will get red cards and be kicked out. And don't be assholic. To the dispatchers or you'll be made to re-do the whole race.". La Rue delivered special 19 th. C telegrams (I got one! And raced in a wool jacket. Did Someb...
