Leila slipped on a wet floor and landed on her shoulder, there was a lot of damage to the muscles and ligaments which meant her shoulder would dislocate at the smallest of things. Leila had keyhole surgery to correct the injury and remade some of the torn soft tissue but was told it would never be perfect. Back in October whilst visiting relatives on the Isle of Bute I had an opportunity to do some paddling on the Kyles of Bute, the narrow strait of water which separate the island from the Argyll mainland, into which the north of Bute fits like a ball and socket. I set out from Rhubodach. My route took me up the east Kyle and then into Loch Riddon. A memory of 2013.

The post-Christmas weather has continued to be frosty in Aberdeenshire; minus 7 Celsius by night and barely rising to freezing by day. Scenery is reduced to a basic but graceful state. In which trees have become ghosts of themselves. Form and pattern are enhanced and etched everywhere one looks. Whilst close up there is exquisite patterning. And the long-dead stems of plants are gilded with flowers of ice.

Mountain and Sea Scotland. Hillwalking and Sea Kayaking in Scotland. Tuesday, 31 March 2015. A melted fort on a Burnt Island. The final part of our day in the Kyles of Bute was visiting the Burnt Islands. A collection of three small islands at the top of the East Kyle. We arrived at the largest of the three, apropriately named Eilean Mor ( Big Island). Just as the tidal stream was turning, but didn't land as the gulls were already in residence and it's a noisy place in the Spring. Monday, 30 March 2015.
