La Vida en Perú: April 2007
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Monday, April 30, 2007. Lord, please help me to have patience. I know better than to get upset over these little things. I know better than to keep thinking of myself. I know better, but still I am so frustrated, all ruffled up. I'm the farthest thing from patient that there is. But because you say, "Be still, and know that I am God," I will be still. Because you tell me to "Wait for the Lord, be strong and take heart, and wait upon the Lord," I will wait. I will trust you. But there are...

La Vida en Perú: September 2006
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Saturday, September 30, 2006. Learning from the natives. The longer we live in the jungle, the more we put this proverb into practice: when you get stuck, either copy the Peruvians, or invent a new way of survival. Carlos and Javier taught us how to make lamps out of milk cans. We now have 8 or 9 of these little lamps made from tin cans, scraps from our tin roof, and old rope we find around the land. We buy the kerosene in town, and don’t have to worry about recharging batteries. At two ...

La Vida en Perú: November 2006
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Wednesday, November 29, 2006. We're in the mountains. Our lips are chapped, our skin is dry, and there isn't mud to be found anywhere. In Arequipa our towels dried overnight, a task that would take at least two days back home in Pucallpa. The lack of oxygen is what we notice the most. We can't breathe! Posted by Ansley at 12:04 PM. In which we head south. Greetings from Puno, Perú, a chilly town on the banks of Lake Titicaca. (Quick refresher from seventh grade geography: Lake Titica...

La Vida en Perú: August 2006
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Monday, August 28, 2006. Rice in Peru is available in a variety of qualities. You can buy a kilo for 1s, 1.20s, 1.40s, all the way up to 2 or 3 soles. We usually buy the cheapest kind and bear the consequences to save money. The cheap rice has an added ingredient: bugs. Every time we want to cook up a pot of rice we have to sort through it first. Beans, oatmeal, pasta, and sugar often come with bugs, too. Sometimes they are dead, sometimes they are crawling around. Do you want a ride?

La Vida en Perú: May 2007
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Thursday, May 31, 2007. Putting up our water tower was a little like an Amish barn raising. The boys built two sides, dug deep holes, then collected a whole bunch of our neighbors in the back of the truck to come and hoist the heavy pieces up and into place. I came out and documented after it was all over. Posted by Ansley at 1:03 PM. Posted by Ansley at 12:44 PM. Friday, May 25, 2007. She talked with her eyes wide open, using her arms for emphasis, and every sentence ran into the next&#...

La Vida en Perú: February 2007
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Wednesday, February 28, 2007. The word for rain in Spanish is lluvia. I remember the word lluvia because it reminds me of the English word jubilant. And that is exactly what the rain is like in the jungle- a triumphant, glad, glorious sort of thing that comes in a wave across the sachi inchi fields on a sweltering February day. It's jubilant. Posted by Ansley at 6:00 PM. Sunday, February 25, 2007. Posted by Ansley at 6:59 PM. Gisella and I at clinic in Tarapoto. You can read more abo...

La Vida en Perú: October 2006
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Tuesday, October 31, 2006. Jenni, our project team leader and guide in this new land, has been gone to the States now for a month. She'll be back soon, but our Peruvian friends and neighbors have begun to think that we, incapable foreigners from the north, are starving and desperate without her. People are always coming up to us and asking, "Are you hungry? Do you have food? Anyway, the current joke is that everyone-Tayna, the Medinas, Hermana Blanca, Veronica at church-is so excited to ...

La Vida en Perú. Sunday, January 28, 2007. Arequipa, November 28. Dancers in Quito, Christmas Eve. The Equator, just north of Quito, Ecuador, with Paola and Karen. The beach in Pisco. John and Jackson try on their Panama hats in Otavalo. Posted by Ansley at 4:22 PM. Fotos de las montañas. Posted by Ansley at 3:41 PM. La Vida en Perú: March 2007
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Thursday, March 29, 2007. The Pediatric wing is divided into four rooms, each with a large label above the door. One is for infants, one room is for crawlers, one for toddlers, one for school aged children. The baby I'm here to see is in the infant room, although he is three years old. His name is Francisco, and that's my blood hanging in the bag above his bed, dripping into a line in his foot. We're both O positive. His diagnosis by the hospital is marasmus with pellagra. Both of th...

La Vida en Perú: December 2006
http://ansleyhowe.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html
La Vida en Perú. Tuesday, December 12, 2006. My winter is complete. I have tasted the snow of the Andes on my tongue. We made a navigational mistake and missed our campsite earlier this afternoon. We were supposed to stop an hour ago, but instead of hiking all the way back down the valley to our safe nest next to a lake, we press on, determined to cross the high pass and not waste all our climbing. We hike on and on. We are cold, red-nosed, tired. Posted by Ansley at 6:15 PM. I bought a $5 map of the Aus...
