Living Histories - Longfellow. Student work from the Living Histories after school program at Longfellow Elementary School in Pasadena, CA. Friday, October 23, 2009. Students have been completing their Picasso portraits this week - loving how these are turning out! I’m always fascinated by how they go about creating an image of themselves. Here are some examples from 4th, 5th and 6th graders at Longfellow:. Thursday, October 8, 2009. An afternoon in the park. Photos from our day in the park below:.

Living Histories - Longfellow. Student work from the Living Histories after school program at Longfellow Elementary School in Pasadena, CA. Friday, September 18, 2009. It’s always kinda amazing how fast summer seems to fly by, but I was excited and ready to be getting back to school this year. Our first week back is usually about introductions and group projects; really focusing on orienting students around the idea of our class being a community and going about work collaboratively.

Living Histories - Longfellow. Student work from the Living Histories after school program at Longfellow Elementary School in Pasadena, CA. Thursday, October 8, 2009. An afternoon in the park. This week was a bit of a catch up one for us; students had a chance to finish up projects from their first three weeks of school (portfolios, identity collages and animal symbol masks), and we threw in a fun fall and Native American inspired activity for some diversity as well. Photos from our day in the park below:.

Living Histories - Hamilton: A new school!

http://hamiltonafterschool.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-school.html

Thursday, September 17, 2009. Hamilton is a new site for us, so we were very excited to get started! We are working with a K, 1st, 4th and 5th grade group there. We got things started by introducing each group to what their Living Histories class was going to be about: art, creativity, writing, community. Like our students at Longfellow. I particularly love the flower pot activity - it’s always fun to grow things, and I like the symbolism of us ‘growing together’. We are still ident...John Muir High Scho...

Living Histories - Hamilton: Student work

http://hamiltonafterschool.blogspot.com/2009/09/student-work.html

Saturday, September 26, 2009. Below are some photos of student work from this week. These were made by 4th graders in Tiffany and Krisztina's class. Students are making portfolios to help organize their work they will produce this year. We discussed the concept of 'creativity' and how that helps one come up with solutions, ideas and what not, and how it's important to value what we create, hence the portfolios. A few examples are below - I really love how some of these turned out! John Muir High School.

Living Histories - Hamilton: Animal Masks and Identity

http://hamiltonafterschool.blogspot.com/2009/10/animal-masks-and-identity.html

Thursday, October 1, 2009. Animal Masks and Identity. This past week, we've been focusing on two new concepts: symbols. We've really tried to push the concept of a symbol being something that stands for something else and have tried to connect that with different ways to represent who we are through the use of symbols. Symbolism is such an important concept that we will be returning to throughout the year, so we're introducing it now so that the kids will be familiar with it later on.

Monday, October 19, 2009. Below are some examples from 1st graders a Hamilton:. Thursday, October 1, 2009. Animal Masks and Identity. This past week, we've been focusing on two new concepts: symbols. They are slowly starting to understand more of these concepts - explanations for their masks are moving away from "I picked a monkey because they like to climb things, and I like to climb things" to "I picked a monkey because I think they are silly, funny, and active.and I think I am like that too!
