November 7, 2009 at 3:52 pm ( nepal. 4 people, 5 days, 9kgs on their backs, 3210m altitude to climb over an 8km distance. It only took an hour for the tips of Annapurna South to show themselves and act as encouragement for us to keep climbing up those steps. Who needs an experienced guide when you find a local dog willing to show you the right path? Beautiful, but can you imagine living here and having to hike up and down hills to do your groceries? I turned around and saw the moon rising behind the hills.

While I was busy entertaining the Chittagongian city-folk during Cyclone Aila, the coastal areas and islands in Bangladesh were (and still are) having a tougher time of it. In terms of cyclone severity, it didn't rate very high on the danger scale, however so much damage has been caused because the cyclone hit at high tide, which meant already high waters just went higher, and higher, and higher. Sunday, March 1, 2009. So the 'gun battle' turned into a bloody mutiny of Bangladesh's border troops in Dhaka, complete with horrendous mass graves, mutilated bodies, and nation-wide condemnation. It looks as if things are settling down now, but this is a scary and sad reminder that democracy and law and order in Bangladesh remain fragile.
