The Loping Squid: June 2009
http://lopingsquid.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Friday, June 5, 2009. I just haven't been running too much. Work has forced me into a long lay off w/ about 8 weeks in inhospitable for running conditions and weather. Then more travel that was not conducive to running. I've tried over the past two or three weeks even did a race this weekend. Considering how much I've been running, I really can't complain too much. I do have 'A Plan.'. The profile is below. It was good and hilly. And my legs are tired. This race was longer. Not as cool as last year.
The Loping Squid: Cobblestone Classic
http://lopingsquid.blogspot.com/2008/05/cobblestone-classic.html
Sunday, May 18, 2008. Yesterday morning I ran the Cobblestone Classic 5 mile run. Tag line "Where Tanks Once Tread" (To find out why, read the Tangent. Below). A Five mile course from Patch Barracks to Panzer Barracks along Panzerstraße. Warning: Long Historical Tangent Ahead. A tip of the hat to Blunoz. Patch Barracks was originally called Kurmärker Kaserne and was constructed starting in about 1936, by, you guessed it, our good old German friends. Great for tanks not so good for knees and ankles! This ...
The Loping Squid: July 2008
http://lopingsquid.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 19, 2008. So, I woke up early this morning to do another half-marathon. This was a memorial run for troops killed in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Unlike the Stuttgart Half Marathon. Now, there are no height markers on that one, but the starting elevation was 218 meters, and the max elevation was somewhere near the 10th km and was about 258 meters. The toughest parts of that race were the numbers and the heat. (See the post. Yeah, it was pretty miserable. I knew I was in for it rig...
The Loping Squid: May 2008
http://lopingsquid.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 31, 2008. Living overseas, we do a lot of internet shopping. It's a great way to get a wide selection and still pay in $ vice paying in € or even worse in £. A company I was turned on to by a fellow running blogger The Running Warehouse. Wide selection, quick turnaround (usually w/in a week, and we have to wait on the USPS) and they've sent me what I ordered every time! Thursday, May 29, 2008. It's Kind of Like Riding a Bike. It started off with just riding the stationary bike a the gym.
The Loping Squid: August 2008
http://lopingsquid.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 31, 2008. I've been trying out some of the new features of my new watch. I figured that the auto lap detect feature was a great match for some speed work on the track. It's great. If you set it up properly, it will detect when you cross your own path and mark a "lap." Great feature. Now, the astute among you may say: "Gee, that's a short last lap. Only 0.06mi. What did you do? As I was rounding the first corner of the track, one of four things happened:. A) I hit an uneven spot, or. I'm no...

Squid Ink Scribbles: October 2008
http://squidinkscribbles.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
This is subject that I find an odd one to talk about in the first real post. But it is a coincidence of events that I feel the need to talk about. First a hat tip to CDR Salamander for this post. I give him the credit for planting the seed here. I'll even go as far as to reference the same point in the video he does The 7:45 mark of part 4 as posted on his site: footage of the rails HMS COVENTRY lined with everything that could throw lead down range. Full-disclosure: I am not a skimmer. Never have be...

I don't want to characterize an entire continent with one story. The Shadow of the Sun. Yet another tardy book review. The wife and I stumbled across this at Borders back in NY last summer. I had no great expectations for it, thinking it would be a good travelogue written from a slightly different perspective. What I got was a bit more than that. Comes through with some great insights about the differences between Africans. There are a few passages in the book that I think warrant specific attention....

Squid Ink Scribbles: ValuJet 592
http://squidinkscribbles.blogspot.com/2009/07/interesting-article.html
This is an old article. But a good one. Think about it some time. Especially this part:. It raises some interesting questions about the efficacy of safety systems, and our reactions to accidents/ mistakes by adding more requirements onto a system. As we add more safeguards and redundancies, the system becomes more opaque and the feedback loops less obvious. A thinking of: "I don't really need to check this, because some one else will catch any mistakes.". Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Squid Ink Scribbles: The Return
http://squidinkscribbles.blogspot.com/2009/07/return.html
I've been dormant for a long time, but wanted to post a quick update. The previous post is a link to an article I've been meaning to share for some time, but just never quite got around to until now. I've also revamped the "What I'm reading" widget to be more accurate. Now it just shows what's on my night stand. Which am I reading on any given night? Your guess is as good as mine. I took a break from non-fiction for a while and polished off two good novels:. It still left me wanting more though. I've...

Squid Ink Scribbles: The Fate of Africa
http://squidinkscribbles.blogspot.com/2009/01/blog-post.html
The Fate of Africa. The Fate of Africa. It's been sitting, reading complete, on the shelf for some time now. I just haven't gotten around to talking about it. As I described in the reading list, it's academic. Not dry but academic. But importantly, it does provide a good survey of African history since the beginning of the Independence period in the mid-twentieth century. Here's a quick summary:. By the time the 'scramble for Africa' was complete, something on the order of 10,000 independent, states, kin...
