A school year in photos. Day 59 – SSHM (Simulated Simple Harmonic Motion). We are studying more of the maths associated with simple harmonic motion. Here we used Yenka. To run simulations. This helps because:. I can set up the labs for everyone and share them, and everyone has a computer, so there is no running out of stuff. You can freeze time and replay it, so it is easy to get data. The animation leads directly to a graph, which forms as the motion happens – this is handy for visualising.

It is great to see connections to grand theories in such simple things. As a bonus, we can also see that this is something that scientists really do! Here is a paper. This group managed to include their smartphones. In this activity – it was the first light source they could think of! A school year in photos. Day 51 – Turbines. As part of the energy resources unit we are looking at how thermal power stations generate electricity. As a short activity we set up a steam source and then challenge the students to build something that will turn as quickly as possible. The main takeaway from this activity is how much energy gets wasted in this energy conversion. There is a clear risk of burns from the steam generator, so the set ups.
