About
http://www.loriwnelson.com/about.html
My crooked path to writing. I didn't start out writing, although I have always been interested in words. In fact, I wanted to be a college professor, even when I wasn't exactly sure what that meant. I knew it had something to do with learning new things all of the time and that sounded like my kind of thing. But change can be difficult. And I pursued my new life as a writer. Today we live on the steppes of Eastern Washington, amid the apple trees and wineries of the Columbia Valley. I walk along the ...

A Hiking Diary of Catalina: West End Catalina Fire
http://hikingcatalina.blogspot.com/2011/05/west-end-fire.html
A Hiking Diary of Catalina. West End Catalina Fire. Those of you in SoCal have probably heard about the recent fire on the west end of Catalina. I wrote an article for The Catalina Islander. About the fire. What I submitted is below. I've inserted some of my pictures in the text - some of these ran in the paper as well. Fire Pushed Back from Banning House Lodge. The fire around 3:00 PM. The Banning House Lodge. Showing the smoldering fire. The Catalina Island Conservancy, Two Harbors Enterprises, and Dav...
A Hiking Diary of Catalina: January 2013
http://hikingcatalina.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
A Hiking Diary of Catalina. Goodbye and thanks for all the hikes. Greetings from Richland, Washington! My family and I have moved from Catalina to sunny Eastern Washington, home to fine wines, minor-league hockey, and fierce spring winds. If I do get back to the island and log a few miles, I'll update the Catalina Hiking Diary. Until then, for you, my few readers, may the views be worth the climb to the top. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Welcome to my hiking blog! Ever wondered where to hike on Catalina?

A Hiking Diary of Catalina: Getting Around
http://hikingcatalina.blogspot.com/2010/10/getting-around.html
A Hiking Diary of Catalina. One of the challenges to hiking on Catalina is getting to the trails. We are lucky that we have a vehicle to get around, but visitors and many residents don't. There are a number of ways to get to trailheads even if you don't have your own transportation. I often see folks hiking on the road between Two Harbors and Little Harbor. Why? The Trans-Catalina Trail goes between the two and provides you with lovely views and NO traffic! Once you reach the island, either at Visitor Se...

To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.".
