Lost in Translation: Cryptic Sculpture (Hirshhorn)
http://lostintranslationdc.blogspot.com/2014/06/cryptic-sculpture-hirshhorn.html
Signs, Inscriptions, and Displays in Washington DC. Thursday, June 12, 2014. This mysterious sculpture is entitled "Antipodes" (Sam Sanborn, 1997) and it stands the garden outside the Hirshhorn Museum. This Arts Observer. Provides a good description of the piece with nice images of the work. I took at look at the other half of the sculpture (left-hand side in this photo), which looks like the letters of some Cyrillic script. In Langley, VA. June 13, 2014 at 12:13 AM. Lost in Translation: Viking Brand in Iceland
http://lostintranslationdc.blogspot.com/2014/07/viking-brand-in-iceland.html
Signs, Inscriptions, and Displays in Washington DC. Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Viking Brand in Iceland. Best use of a letter-form in national branding: Viking sword and two axe-blades form the outline of a stylized Þ ("thorn") at the National Museum of Iceland [its name in Icelandic: Þjóðminjasafn Íslands]. Reykjavík, Iceland, July 2014. FYI, in Icelandic there are two different letters to indicate what we transcribe as the "th" sound in English. Indicates the "th" sound as in "thunder," while.
Lost in Translation: Here Lie Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan
http://lostintranslationdc.blogspot.com/2009/11/here-lie-helen-keller-and-anne-sullivan.html
Signs, Inscriptions, and Displays in Washington DC. Sunday, November 1, 2009. Here Lie Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan. This plaque in the National Cathedral indicates the spot where Helen Keller and her lifelong companion Anne Sullivan have their final resting place. The Braille inscription beneath the raised letters are well-worn. It's clear that many visitors have run their fingers over these lines. November 2009. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Lost in Translation: Helen Keller (Capitol Visitor Center)
http://lostintranslationdc.blogspot.com/2011/09/helen-keller-capitol-visitor-center.html
Signs, Inscriptions, and Displays in Washington DC. Thursday, September 15, 2011. Helen Keller (Capitol Visitor Center). I've already posted about the National Statuary Hall Collection. But I thought I should follow up with one more statue. Helen Keller, whose statue is now in the Capitol Visitor Center, is one of two statues representing Alabama. Keller was deaf and blind at an early age, and this statue depicts a linguistic epiphany at a water spout. For more on Helen Keller, see this plaque.

Cultural Misadventures of a Spaniard. The true meaning of loitering. Follow Lost in translation on WordPress.com. The true meaning of loitering. Thursday, October 4, 2012. Missing Reports: Research Biopsy in Cancer Trials. A growing number of drug trials are collecting tissue to determine whether the drug hits its molecular target. These studies are called “pharmacodynamics.”. And in cancer, many pharmacodynamics studies involve collection of tumor tissue through biopsies. These procedures are painful, and are performed solely to answer scientific questions. That is, they generally have no diagnostic or clinical value. We also find that researche...

Strocks in Gabon: Lost in Translation
Strocks in Gabon: Lost in Translation. The life of an American expatriate and family in Libreville, Gabon. I am sure I could have come up with something more clever for the title, something not already starring Bill Murray in a foreign country, but this is where I landed. So far, most of my experiences revolve around the use of very poorly spoken French, so it only seemed fitting.hopefully, I can paint the pictures more accurately in English. Enjoy! Monday, November 28, 2011. You can boil it. By this...
