Gretchen and Ben meet Japan: March 2009

http://www.lostmochi.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Gretchen and Ben meet Japan. A month of gastronomic adventures and castle exploration. I want to go back. Tuesday, March 31, 2009. 3/30 gretchen meets a whale shark. Make that two whale sharks. Brace yourselves for pictures, folks. Today Ben treated me by going with me to the Osaka Kaiyukan aquarium, home to two whale sharks! The exhibits focused on oceanic habitats in and around the pacific ring of fire. But the highlight of the aquarium was the massive tank containing the two whale sharks (both small f...

Gretchen and Ben meet Japan. A month of gastronomic adventures and castle exploration. I want to go back. Friday, April 10, 2009. The well-worn walking route took us past many old shrines. One had the most spectacular sakura tree we had encountered yet. At the Kasuga shrine, we walked down paths lined by over 1000 stone lanterns. They are only lit twice a year, but I wish we could have witnessed that; It gave me goosebumps to imagine it. Oh was it cold outside! Ben and I fought our way in to get a piece ...

Gretchen and Ben meet Japan. A month of gastronomic adventures and castle exploration. I want to go back. Tuesday, March 31, 2009. 3/28-29 dancing in osaka. For the first time of our trip, Ben and I were able to connect with the dance scene in a city! We were invited to join a small group the following day for a dance under the cherry blossoms at Osaka-jo castle in honor of Frankie Manning. Another translation for non-dancing readers: Frankie Manning. Sieges, invasions, battles, etc! Inside the castle wa...

Gretchen and Ben meet Japan. A month of gastronomic adventures and castle exploration. I want to go back. Friday, April 10, 2009. We had rented (for free! The day winding down, we made the mildly stressful ride back through town (pedestrian dodging is not much fun on the other end of the handlebars either) dropped the bikes off, and found the local grocery store for train vittles. I found an appropriate shop next door and made Ben pose. April 26, 2009 at 10:15 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Eurasian Hobos: January 2013

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 24, 2013. Everyone's favorite day for Korean students looking cute is the day before our Chuseok break. Chuseok is often likened to Korean Thanksgiving. Just like last year. Dressing the kindergarteners in their Hanbok (traditional Korean garb) is adorable. One of my kindergarten classes: Woojin, Jackie, Amber, Chloe, Patrick, and Tony (Many students leave a day early so they can visit relatives for longer). Eating said rice cakes. Making Jaegi (basically traditional Korean hacky sack).

Eurasian Hobos: April 2012

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Saturday, April 21, 2012. I arrived in London to find that my couchsurf hosts had not received my message confirming that I would be staying with them. Thankfully, they were fine with me staying nonetheless. They served a lovely roast to me and another couch surfer. I had spent two half weeks in London in 2006, but was at the time too cheap to pay the overpriced entrance to Westminster Abbey. I'm glad I did this time around, though to be fair to my past self, the outside is just as impressive. I had enou...

Eurasian Hobos: February 2014

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 6, 2014. Buddha's Birthday at Bongamsa Temple. In 2011, Buddha's Birthday (as celebrated in Korea) fell on May 10th, a Tuesday. Our singular day off was enough time to visit Bongamsa Temple, which is only open to the public one day a year for the occasion. Barbara, Sam, and I took an exceedingly early morning bus out Mungyeon in central South Korea. The surrounding mountains were completely shrouded in mist at dawn. The guardian lions at this temple had some goofy expressions. I never ...

Eurasian Hobos: July 2012

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 24, 2012. Where my belongings and laptop were searched for drugs or child pornography. Oh, profiling. Good times. In her defense, I do look super sketchy with my travel beard. Once the airport security determined that I am in fact not a threat, I was able to head out into the city. That day I mostly just trudged out to the hostel and ate some Thai food. I considered signing up for one of their day trips before realizing I could just spend bus fare to get to the same places. I would be terri...

Eurasian Hobos: Ben and Elana's Wedding

Thursday, November 6, 2014. Ben and Elana's Wedding. I have trouble thinking of my time in the US as travel blog-worthy because I have trouble thinking of it as travel. Which is silly. Anyway, After my second year in Korea, I returned for Ben and Elana's amazing wedding at Newt's Hollow, outside of Berkeley. Photos by Stacia Torborg. Eurasian Hobos: August 2014

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, August 20, 2014. You may have noticed that in my Japan pictures I had a lot less hair than usual. Here's what I looked like the week before:. This picture is like a glimpse into an alternate universe where someone with my genetics grew up deep in meth lab territory:. Curiosity sated, I went for the Ra's Al Ghul look:. The fuzz came back by the end of my week in Japan. I only had one more week in Korea before jetting off to the Bay Area for Ben and Elana's beautiful whimsical wedding. I fully e...

Eurasian Hobos: December 2013

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 31, 2013. Cambodia Day 3, Part 2: The South Gate of Angkor Thom. Angkor Thom was an enormous walled city, the capital of King Jayavarman VII, who ordered some of the Khmer's largest building projects. The gate begins with a bridge whose railing is another depiction of the churning of the sea of milk. The naga with its head at the outer end of the bridge is held along its body by the devas and asuras. The moat is large enough to appear to be a river. Along the moat's banks. I couldn't he...

Eurasian Hobos: September 2014

http://euasiahobos.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, September 2, 2014. This return trip was at the invitation of Kyungrae, the man who we met at Bongamsa Temple. On Buddha's Birthday, and who became our unofficial guide as well as our generous ride. Barbara and I took him up on his offer to show us around Daegu and to go visit Haeinsa together. My first visit was by bus, so I unknowingly passed right by a pavilion that was famed as a monk philosopher's favorite meditation grounds. The river there really was quite peaceful. Dunkel in the Far East.

(Clever title)

Monday, May 24, 2010. LOST 6x17/18: "Perfectly perfect in every way". I loved it. I haven’t been uniformly positive about every episode of the series, but this was an amazing finale. Yes, it was sentimental. No, we didn’t see Walt or get the answer to what the numbers really meant or get the Man In Black’s name. (It was Samuel, by the way, according to a video clip on E! And yes, it got pretty dusty in the room numerous times on Sunday night. But I feel great about “The End”. Lost 6x17/18: The End. When ...
