lotta's garden: October 2009

http://lottasgarden.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 17, 2009. Several years ago I planted some red raspberry plants along our back fence, envisioning a glorious raspberry patch basking in the sheltered sunshine producing an abundance of delicious berries for my morning breakfast. Well, the raspberries are now overtaken by rambling grape vines, full grown mulberry trees, and stubborn trumpet vines. The berry canes are slowly suffocating and harvesting them has become an impossible task. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A way to garden.

lotta's garden: June 2010

http://lottasgarden.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 10, 2010. The last few days have been absolutely perfect here in our little town. Temperatures are hovering around 80 F, humidity is low, and the sun is out. The garden is on its best behavior. This is what happens when you repeatedly complain about not having enough peas. Rhubarb and raspberry abundance. A bit of garden whimsy, provided by my mom. We call him Boll, after a Swedish children's story. Jumble of herbs and vigorous tomato plants = happiness. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

lotta's garden: purple shades

http://lottasgarden.blogspot.com/2011/04/purple-shades.html

Tuesday, April 19, 2011. Just a few samples from the current color explosion in the garden. In bloom – tree peony, euphorbia, and fritillaria. Leafing out – red bud, japanese maple, smokebush, and japanese painted fern. Just lovely. You have a lot of great material for dyes. Am envious! April 19, 2011 at 9:55 PM. Violet Hill Farm: Planting Underway

http://violethillfarm.blogspot.com/2015/02/planting-underway.html

Seasonal musings from a designers evolving country garden. Monday, 2 February 2015. The new japanese inspired water courtyard is about 90% complete with planting undertaken in late spring. Just a few more rocks and pebbles to add to hide pond liner and a year for the plants to mature. H. Ere is the plant list for the garden – a blend of native and exotic species with predominantly green on green with occasional silver and white colour scheme:. Juniper (cascade style bonsai). 8216;Red rocks’. And the skin...

Violet Hill Farm: September 2014

http://violethillfarm.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Seasonal musings from a designers evolving country garden. Saturday, 27 September 2014. A Garden Close Up. A generous lend of a macro lens from Jack Hobbs at the Auckland Botanic Gardens for my trip to the rainforests of Borneo has ensured a new addition to the ‘must have’ list for Christmas. It reminds me of the wise advice of an elderly gardener I used to visit as an 11 year old. She had a large rambling garden full of roses and bulbs and some very sweet bantams (of whose eggs I always went home with).

Violet Hill Farm: Favourite Plants

http://violethillfarm.blogspot.com/2014/09/favourite-plants.html

Seasonal musings from a designers evolving country garden. Wednesday, 10 September 2014. It’s never hard with our gorgeous array of New Zealand native plants but I’ve just fallen head over heals in love with two particular natives that now have pride of place in my Asian inspired Water courtyard and Merlot garden. The first – Sporadanthus ferrugineus (giant wire rush). 8211; is a restiad species from the domed bogs that were once found throughout the North Island (now restricted to a few in Waikato).

Violet Hill Farm: December 2011

http://violethillfarm.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Seasonal musings from a designers evolving country garden. Saturday, 31 December 2011. This year the plants seem to have finally covered the majority of the plastic framework of the wall (I used a Maccaferri green wall product) and is looking quite effective. I have included the plant list below, but the most successful to date have been the NZ native mint (I didn't even know there was one), and the. Green Wall Plant Species being Trialled (all sourced from Oratia Native Plant Nursery). View of Green Wall.

Violet Hill Farm: March 2012

http://violethillfarm.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Seasonal musings from a designers evolving country garden. Thursday, 15 March 2012. The aubergines have been very successful this year and have produced a number of large glossy purple/black fruits. I love the idea that they (including tomatoes, potatoes and capsicum) are all from the nightshade or Solanaceae family and potentially so dangerous with their vast and interesting mix of alkaloid properties! Which reminds me of a wonderful book that I discovered recently by Amy Stewart. Posted by Calyx Design.

Violet Hill Farm: August 2012

http://violethillfarm.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Seasonal musings from a designers evolving country garden. Wednesday, 8 August 2012. I was pleasantly distracted this morning as I opened the gate to go to work - a delicate gossamer threaded web (strung between the bare winter branches of the Pin oaks) caught my eye in the morning fog. It's nice on occasion to be reminded of the pleasure of stopping to notice the small things and the beauty and delicacy of the natural world - suffice it to say I had a lovely drive to work! Figurern...
