WELCOME to LOUTH SEARCH DOGS. Louth Search Dogs evolved from an idea thought of at a local dog training club way back in 1996. A Police Dog Handler had come along to assess dogs for the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog award scheme. He had an idea to develop a passive search dog team for Lincolnshire to help the Police search for missing persons, as police dogs are very good at locating people but not so friendly when they find them!

Our first assessment took place at the Police HQ in Lincoln in August 1997, one of the hottest weekends of that year! Handlers and dogs were tested on varying areas and locations requiring different search methods and tactics, all by Home Office Approved Instructors. All passed and were awarded Certificates of Merit by Inspector Chuck Boulton. All dogs have been reassessed annually since that time. The Kirsty Carver Trophy:. 1999 Norah Rymer and Sue Herd. 2002 Helen Bennett and Jane Murdoch.

We owe our success to the Lincolnshire Police Dog Section who help with the training and licensing of our dogs each year and also Lincolnshire Police in general who have faith enough to call us out on searches and give us our credibility. We are also very grateful to all those who have donated to our cause to help buy essential equipment such as radios, waterproofs, boots, etc and also to those local farmers and land owners who let us loose on their land for training purposes. Louth Search Dogs was formed to provide a free, voluntary, passive searching service to the community of Lincolnshire, to back up the Police when searching for missing persons. We have a close liaison with the Dog Section of Lincolnshire Police, who oversee and assess our training. Home Office Approved Instructors assess us and our dogs annually and, as far as we are aware, we are one of a small number of civilian groups to have achieved this unique status in Great Britain.

We have regular training sessions throughout Lincolnshire and these are on a variety of terrain, i.e. buildings, rubble, woodland, open areas, etc. All members have to be prepared to go 'missing' for each other and this can be quite uncomfortable in the middle of winter.
