We all interacted with the children, but I spent most of my time remodeling their facilities. Christy did the more important task of feeding and caring for the residents. Imagine a world where everyone was loved and cared for as we would love and care for Jesus himself. We then would honor and respect one another without thought ...

Subscribe to this blog's feed. Laquo; Chasing Our Tail. On the way home Christy and I were talking about playing games. We enjoy playing Apples to Apples, Cribbage, Mexican Train, Scrabble, Sequence, and many others. As we talked, suddenly the thought struck me: What kind of games would Jesus enjoy playing? Would Jesus enjoy playing games that involve the accumulation of riches or resources? Would Jesus enjoy playing games that involve death and destruction? Would Jesus enjoy playing games at all? Imagin...

Last week one of our members took this picture of a flower blooming out of a storm sewer on Park Ave. If you look closely, you will see it’s growing out of a nest of dead branches and leaves stuck in the opening of the gutter. Somehow a seed landed in the brush pile and grew to be a beautiful flower. We would be much better off if we learned to bloom where we were planted. Joy an...

Subscribe to this blog's feed. I am not sure if it is the builder in me, but I enjoy the remodeling shows on HGTV. My favorites involve the Property Brothers (Drew and Jonathan Scott), but I also like Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna, Flip or Flop with Tarek and Christina, and Love It or List it with Hilary and David. They fascinate me with how they fix up and renovate homes, but the costs seem excessive. Posted at 02:47 PM. Last month Christy and I had a wonderful vacation in Newport, Rhode Island. ...

I was an assistant spiritual director for the men’s weekend and gave the talk Obstacles to Grace. It was a powerful experience and many men moved closer to God. We seem to be more inclined to want things right or good for ourselves, often at the expense of others. We struggle to look at things from other people’s perspecti...

I was reading in my bible last week and came across this passage in Malachi: Bring the whole tenth-part to the storage house so there might be food in my house. Please test me in this, says the Lord of heavenly forces. See whether I do not open all the windows of the heavens for you and empty out a blessing until there is enough. (Malachi 3:10). We still fix large meals and eat lunches from it for many days&...

I met him when I went to work at an orphanage in a remote area of Jamaica. He inspired me with his engaging smile and positive attitude despite his being severely handicapped from birth by Spinal Bifida. I share this story, because I saw the light of God’s love shine through his smile. His faith and perseverance are wonderful examples of how to reach our po...

Working hard in the heat was also very exhausting. Fortunately, they gave us the last two days for rest and reflection, and we needed both. Since then I have had a lot of time to think about the joy and exhilaration of those events. As I said, they shared a common thread of the excitement and power of the wind. The Greek word used for wind and spiri...We ca...
