August 23rd, 2013. The Place: A Haitian and Dominican Batay in Barahona, Dominican Republic. Summer 2013. It is reality, brutal reality. A Dominican local, a human cement mixer swaying in unison with his pick-axe and barking with an attitude seeming to complain about me and you and all of us giving time. But maybe he’s not complaining at all. Maybe he always looks like he wants to fight. My Spanish isn’t where it should be, maybe I misunderstand his intentions. I shall categorize them as - Newcomer, Remainder, and Fail-safe (the one with the mask). So here it goes. Every time a newcomer comes, the newcomer kills the failsafe. Then, shift all roles.
