The Louisiana Legislature authorized $20,000 to purchase land on which a new Charity Hospital building would be constructed. A four-acre parcel on Texas Avenue and Murphy Street was purchased for $1,200 from Mrs. F. E. Sewall on June 1, 1882. This area of Shreveport was. August 8, 1889.

1890 1891 1892 1893. Dr Thomas E. Schumpert. Shreveport Charity Hospital Hires Dr. T.E. Schumpert as Chief Surgeon. Dr Thomas E. Schumpert was hired as chief surgeon of the Shreveport Charity Hospital at a salary of $80 per month. A short time later, he assumed the duties of superintendent as well. As superintendent, he was provided with room and board, but his salary was reduced to $75 per month. This image is representative of nurses at the turn of the century.
