Tuesday, July 01, 2014. Mount Evans, Colorado - Highest Paved Road in North America. I really enjoyed the road trip with Allen up to the top of Mount Evans, Colorado, yesterday. Mt Evans is one of Colorado's "Fourteeners", so-called because the summit is above 14,000 feet above mean sea level. It is west of Golden, south of the town of Idaho Springs. A paved road leads through beautiful scenery, from I-70 all the way up to the summit. It is a highly-recommended half-day trip. Echo lake from above. These ...

Monday, May 26, 2014. While hiking the Shenandoah Mountain Trail, I heard something skitter up a tree about 100 feet off the trail. I looked closely and saw this:. It was too big for a cat, and black panthers don't live around here. Then I saw his brother:. At this point, I began looking around for mama bear. I began by very carefully searching the woods behind me, because I definitely did not want to be between mama and those cubs. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Tuesday, March 18, 2014. Twenty-Four (24) Species at or around the Feeder. Brown-headed Cowbird (no joke, look it up! Goldfinch (male, winter plumage). Not shown, because I haven't been able to get a photo of them, are red-winged blackbirds, and robins. And not shown because I do my best to scare them away immediately, are common blackbirds, starlings, purple grackles, and one visit from a sparrow hawk. Links to this post. Wednesday, May 09, 2012. Dinant has several claims to fame. First, it's the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone. Second, it was known for its intricate metalworkers and copper artists in the middle ages. Fourth, as the copperworks diminished in importance, the artists started making intricate cookie cutters. Dinant has many storefront bakeries holding these huge artistic cookies. And they actually do taste quite good! Links to this post. Links to this post. We walked around the southern ...

Sunday, March 03, 2013. 2-Way Radio Contact with 76 Countries . in 22 Hours. I'm actively disengaging and "de-strangling" myself from all the myriad service obligations I've been entangled in over the years. I'm only about a third done with that endeavor, but I finally found a few hours this weekend to get on the ham radio for a few hours. I'd forgotten how much fun it is to play. Links to this post. Saturday, November 02, 2013. I Love Living in this Valley! Today, November 2, I spent some time this morning driving around taking some photos of the more outstanding trees here in the valley. Bridgewater, Fadley Road, Centerville Road, Union Springs Road, and the road leading up to Reddish Knob. Unfortunately, the photos just don't do the scenery justice, however. Links to this post.
