Why Berlin is Bohemian | The Berlin Outsider
https://berlinoutsider.wordpress.com/2013/03/08/why-berlin-is-bohemian
Why Berlin is Bohemian. March 8, 2013. I have long been a fan of Professor Richard Florida. He has written many works on innovation, bohemia, creativity, and social networks. I taught his ideas in emerging Eastern Europe back in the day, and still fall back on his ideas to explain the world around me. I would particularly recommend The Geography of Bohemia, which you can download here:. This is the Abstract, to give you some idea of where it’s going:. If the politicians aspire to Berlin looking like any ...

It’s a bit controversial… | The Berlin Outsider
https://berlinoutsider.wordpress.com/am-i-right
It’s a bit controversial…. Yes, that’s the idea🙂. Don’t take it personally or get wound up, I’m just airing ideas and provoking some thought. Sometimes it’s good to challenge the accepted wisdom, or acceptable opinions. I don’t claim to be right. I am floating ideas. Be patient. Feel free to disagree, but don’t get upset. Berlin’s hidden war memorials | The Berlin Outsider
https://berlinoutsider.wordpress.com/2013/03/26/berlins-hidden-war-memorials
Berlin’s hidden war memorials. March 26, 2013. It is strange to be in a European capital city that has none of the traditional trappings of past wars. In Mitte you can see reminders of the war in grand modern buildings, and of course there are the museums, the Holocaust memorial, and commemorations of the Berlin air-lift. But there is no mention of the young soldiers, and the Generals that sent them to their deaths. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Address never made public). Follow B...

All sex and no taxis | The Berlin Outsider
https://berlinoutsider.wordpress.com/2014/11/22/all-sex-and-no-taxis
All sex and no taxis. November 22, 2014. Whilst getting out of it is the first thing on my mind from the minute I’m placed in it, getting home from Berlin’s charmless Tegel Airport is never easy, and certainly never pleasant. By public transport my flat is about 45 minutes away, and the ticket machines don’t take credit cards so most people just landed, with new 50 Euro notes or a wallet full of plastic, can’t buy tickets anyway. I am reminded of the night I saw 5 policemen drag a tourist off the Ubahn f...

What is this? | The Berlin Outsider
https://berlinoutsider.wordpress.com/about
The Berlin Outsider is a stream of consciousness emanating from an expat perspective of Berlin. The city is going through something people will refer back to in the future. It is a messy teenager; strangely dressed, unable to handle its drink, and bursting with life, ideas, and vitality. It is chaotic and charming, developing an identity that will define it later, and clearly a child with great potential. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Berlin Airport secrets | The Berlin Outsider
https://berlinoutsider.wordpress.com/2013/05/17/berlin-airport-secrets
May 17, 2013. Secret tips to getting in and out of Berlin with ease. As I wandered past a vast security queue at Luton, then sat reading before being the last to board my plane, calmly sitting down in my favourite seat 1F, I realised it would be churlish not to share with a few readers the lessons I’ve learned over many years of air travel, and to explain how to get in and out of Berlin with ease. To make the most of flying Ryanair, the best travel tip is to fly Easyjet. It is very hard to make Ryana...

Internet Hell in Berlin | The Berlin Outsider
https://berlinoutsider.wordpress.com/2013/04/02/internet-hell-in-berlin
Internet Hell in Berlin. April 2, 2013. As I write this I am sitting in my bed waiting for the Internet wizards at O2 to call me. This process of getting internet hooked up in my place has been the single most frustrating thing about moving to Berlin far more challenging than gaining my Visa (I’m American). Mostly, due to feeling helpless and waiting and disconnected. Get the 2 year contract and sign it over. — Already decided this was too risky. My next option (and still not out to of the question at th...

Cabin life – Berlin and more | The Berlin Outsider
https://berlinoutsider.wordpress.com/2013/05/10/cabin-life-berlin-and-more
Cabin life – Berlin and more. May 10, 2013. My friend is coming to Berlin and rather shyly said he was staying in a hostel not a hotel… well, a sort of hostel. maybe it’s a hotel. I looked it up, and realised its that crazy boat you can see by Warschauer Bridge. Looks like great fun, and on a lovely summer’s evening what better than to be bedding down in a cabin on the Spree. It reminded me of another super boat hotel, on the Danube in Bratislava. Botel Marina. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. All sex and no ...

Let me rent my flat out! It’s my flat! | The Berlin Outsider
https://berlinoutsider.wordpress.com/2013/06/06/let-me-rent-my-flat-out-its-my-flat
Let me rent my flat out! It’s my flat! June 6, 2013. Reading in Venture Village. About proposed laws to ban short term rentals in Berlin I come back to the subject of gentrification in Berlin. Why is anti-gentrification racist? Well, increasingly it is established locals saying: you foreigners, coming here and messing up our utopia, spending money, raising prices, and creating businesses go home, leave us alone! Firstly, there is a real ideological paradox in Berlin. Economically, Germany is the capi...
