Lujeri Tea Production

Lujeri Tea Estates produce some 12,500 tones of made tea from 55,000 tons of green leaf in its four factories. Smallholder farmers currently account for 15% of this production. The company has 3,300 hectare under tea as well as 1,300 hectares of blue gum and 700 hectares of Macadamia. Tea is sold both by forward contract and on the Limbe auction, where Lujeri teas are regularly available. When the leaf has reached the desired moisture content the leaf is weighed and sent to the rolling room for processing.

Lujeri Tea Smallholder Farmers

Smallholder farmers provide a significant and increasing percentage of the greenleaf tea processed by Lujeri and are an important part of the community. The number of farmers has increased from 1100 in 2001 to nearly 6000 in 2007. These farmers now provide 15% of the crop processed by the four factories. Leaf is collected by Lujeri, weighed, recorded against the farmers who produced it and then transported to the factories for processing. This trust and its member farmers have now received the Fairtrade.

Maintaining high production and product standards have always been important at Lujeri. The company is confident that customers (tea blenders) and the final consumer can use Lujeri products with complete confidence as far as quality, hygiene and health are concerned. Our own internal quality management system and adherence to HACCP fundamentals ensures that a safe quality product is produced. Malawi Bureau of Standards. Smallholder farmers were granted Fairtrade.
