Wine, Water, and Blood: October 2008
http://sailinghardships.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Wine, Water, and Blood. Three planes of thought through which to sail. Tuesday, October 28, 2008. I just received Bob Dylan's. 160;in the mail. It's a delightful collection of rare and unreleased tracks from recent years. The most rewarding gem so far is an expanded version of one of my favorite songs:. Contemplate these words — only a snippet of the full lyrics, mind you — and think on how true they are to the human experience. Skies are grey, I'm looking for anything that will bring a happy glow.

Wine, Water, and Blood: Why We Lie
http://sailinghardships.blogspot.com/2012/05/why-we-lie.html
Wine, Water, and Blood. Three planes of thought through which to sail. Tuesday, May 29, 2012. From the Wall Street Journal: Why We Lie. This is fascinating research, but the "why" alluded to in the title is never revealed. The "who" stands as an homage to Gregory House: "Everybody Lies." The interesting information provided within is the "when.". My philosophical take on the "why" is that, unlike the humanistic ideal, people are not. Essentially good. We know. As good. Yet we still do the opposite.

Wine, Water, and Blood: February 2009
http://sailinghardships.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Wine, Water, and Blood. Three planes of thought through which to sail. Wednesday, February 4, 2009. Here's a quick, off-the-cuff list of music I've been enjoying recently:. By Plants and Animals. Really fun, melodic, folksy rock. I especially appreciate their rustic, wild tinge — which makes sense, given the band's name. Both the lyrics and the music are contemplative and tender. For Emma, Forever Ago. Mellow and enchanting. I especially love "Re: Stacks" — sad, yet sweet and hopeful. Links to this post.

Wine, Water, and Blood: Daily Dose of Infixes
http://sailinghardships.blogspot.com/2008/11/daily-dose-of-infixes.html
Wine, Water, and Blood. Three planes of thought through which to sail. Monday, November 10, 2008. Daily Dose of Infixes. In some of today's random Facebook correspondence, I was struck by the following singular-to-plural conversion:. Passerby becomes passer s. Aha - an English infix. 30 seconds of Google use uncovered "spoonsful" and "cupsful" as companions of "passersby" — can anyone think of others? November 10, 2008 at 12:42 PM. November 10, 2008 at 1:26 PM. So does it work universally? Affixes (indee...

Wine, Water, and Blood: July 2012
http://sailinghardships.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Wine, Water, and Blood. Three planes of thought through which to sail. Thursday, July 19, 2012. Every once in a while I read something to this effect:. Christians are so stupid and hypocritical. How can they say they follow the Bible when they eat shellfish ( Lev. 11:10. Wear mixed fabric ( Lev. 19:19. They don't even know what that book says! For example, this story about a man who tattoos a verse forbidding homosexuality. Strikes non-Christians as the ultimate in idiotic hypocrisy. 1 God gave to Adam a...

Wine, Water, and Blood: Waiting for the Church
http://sailinghardships.blogspot.com/2012/05/waiting-for-church.html
Wine, Water, and Blood. Three planes of thought through which to sail. Thursday, May 3, 2012. Waiting for the Church. You've probably heard some variation of the Island joke before. There's a particularly trenchant one below, copied from Wikipedia. A Scottish Presbyterian is rescued after many years on a desert island. As he stands on the deck of the rescuing vessel, the captain says to him, "I thought you were stranded alone. How come I can see three huts on the beach? And the third one? There is a stil...

Wine, Water, and Blood: November 2008
http://sailinghardships.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Wine, Water, and Blood. Three planes of thought through which to sail. Sunday, November 23, 2008. Phases of iPhone Death. I dropped my iPhone this morning — into the toilet. Don't worry: the water was clean. Well, as clean as toilet water can be. I pulled it out. And tried in vain to turn it off. The water made it impossible to use the touchscreen. I pawed at the "Slide to power off" bar for a few frantic seconds before giving up. The phone rebooted and asked me to plug it into iTunes, or "Slide for emer...
