Musings about Faith: May 2014
http://pastorduncansblog.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 29, 2014. Reflections on the text for Ascension – Acts 1:6-14. Read the text here: Acts 1:1-14. In the early years of the church through most of history the Feast of the Ascension held as important a place in the lives of worshippers as did Christmas. In fact, in some ways it was more important. But falling as it does on the 40. Day after Easter, which is always on a Thursday, means that the day never cycles around to Sunday like most of the rest of our festivals. So the story of the Ascens...

Musings about Faith: July 2015

Monday, July 27, 2015. John #5 – The Tale of Two Disciples: The Encounter at Noon – John 4:5-42. It was a hot and dusty day. Jesus and his disciples were on the road again and, as usual, Jesus walked with a purpose; he knew where he was going. He was headed to Jerusalem, but this time he had decided to travel right through the heart of Samaria. The disciples I suspect were probably unhappy and uncomfortable with this trip. The conflict went back several hundred years. But here was Jesus and the disciples...

Musings about Faith: September 2014
http://pastorduncansblog.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 25, 2014. Reflections on the text – Matthew 21:23-32. Read the text here: Matthew 21:23-32. Well, things are beginning to heat up. Immediately before our passage for today Jesus has entered into Jerusalem in triumph – Hosanna to the Son of David! He immediately goes to the Temple, enters it and begins to push over tables - …you have made (my house) a den of robbers. 8211; Jesus yells at them. It is of course a trick question. Jesus cannot answer it without getting deeper into trouble.

Musings about Faith: John Series - Sermon #2 - "Come and See"
http://pastorduncansblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/john-series-sermon-2-come-and-see.html
Monday, July 20, 2015. John Series - Sermon #2 - "Come and See". Sermon #2 - "Come and See" - John 1-35-51. What is your experience of God? Do you experience a relationship with God that is close and accessible – intimate even? Or do you experience God as being distant – inaccessible – judgmental – even fearful. The fact is that for many it is the latter – for many God is remote and inaccessible. I think this is the common experience of many. Even Jacob it seems experienced God/Yahweh in this way. No ...

Musings about Faith: John #4 – A Tale of 2 Disciples: The Visitor at Midnight – John 3:1-21
http://pastorduncansblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/john-4-tale-of-2-disciples-visitor-at.html
Saturday, July 25, 2015. John #4 – A Tale of 2 Disciples: The Visitor at Midnight – John 3:1-21. 8230; Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness…. The escape from Egypt had been so dramatic and exciting. Moses driving this disorganized group of former slaves towards the Red Sea – in front of them, leading the way – a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night…. But then the wandering begins. 40 years of wandering in the desert – no food – no water – harsh conditions. Just as Moses l...

Musings about Faith: November 2014
http://pastorduncansblog.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 28, 2014. Reflections on the Gospel – Mark 13:24-37. Read the text here: Mark 13:24-37. The Lord is coming! These themes of the season of Advent are also themes of this passage in the Gospel of Mark. Last week we finished our experience of the Gospel of Matthew with the prophecy of the Sheep and the Goats from Matthew 25; this week we begin our year of Mark with a passage from the heart of what is called the “Little Apocalypse” in Mark. What in the world is this all about? So Apocalyptic...
