The Here and There: Birdy Corner = Great Bird
http://lynnjones11.blogspot.com/2012/09/birdy-corner-great-bird.html
Friday, September 21, 2012. Birdy Corner = Great Bird. We had come up with a tentative ID of Lark Sparrow and with some more internet research it was confirmed. Sue (my coworker) will probably blog some info about the species on our work blog HERE. The quick story is that Lark Sparrows are vagrants in Connecticut and only a couple show up in CT every year if that. Oh and it was a LIFE BIRD for me. Enjoy the grainy photos! The Here and There: November 2013
http://lynnjones11.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 25, 2013. Not so Big Year- 2012. For the year 2012, I engaged in a friendly competition with my friend Heather from Oregon. As I've mentioned in the blog before, the rules are simple. Each of us would make a state list for our respective states for the year. Birds seen or heard within state lines during the year could be counted. Now for how the year shook out. I ticked off another 20 species before heading into the final push of the year. With one month to go, I focused my efforts on th...
The Here and There: A Piping Plover Story

Tuesday, March 1, 2011. A Piping Plover Story. 2010 banded Piping Plover. 2011 banded Piping Plover. Here's a few of the other finds of the day. One bird that I didn't photograph but was a lifer for me was a Caspian Tern, who sat on a distant sandbar and didn't even budge when two Royal Terns stopped in with one begging from the other constantly. Dunlin (1 of 1000 or so). Osprey, with a fish to share. Ruddy Turnstone- several were present. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A Piping Plover Story.
The Here and There: From the South
http://lynnjones11.blogspot.com/2014/01/from-south.html
Friday, January 31, 2014. It's the time for my annual migration (lol, eyeroll) down to Florida to see the parents and the birds hanging around. The first few days have been rainy, rainy, rainy. Finally, today I got up and decided to brave the cloudy drizzly skies and head out to my favorite spot, Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve. Female Red-bellied Woodpecker: "What'chu lookin at? Common Grackle: common for sure but their colors are not! Painted Buntings: female to the left, male on right.

2010 US Road Trip and Other Bird MoJo. Tuesday, February 23, 2010. Penfield Reef- Fairfield, CT. Yesterday (2/22) in the late morning, Charlie Barnard and I took a walk out onto Penfield Reef in Fairfield in hopes of some shorebirds, ducks, and seals. All were present in OK numbers except the former. Only a few Sanderlings. Below is our tally for the hour or so we spent out there:. 15) Brant (I expected to see more). 400) Goldeneye (a huge flock came up and there were at least 200 in just that one).

2010 US Road Trip and Other Bird MoJo. Thursday, June 17, 2010. Complete US Bird List as of 1/1/10-. After reviewing my notes from the trip, notes from home, and my in progress year list from CT, here is what I've gotten so far (you can tell which were here in CT in winter before I left, and those not. I got to see many of our winter guys up in breeding territory. really neat):. L)- indicates a lifer. Cackling Goose (many in the middle fly-way). Goose (same as Cacklers. many migrants). RT Hawk (5 sbsps.

2010 US Road Trip and Other Bird MoJo. Sunday, March 28, 2010. Trumpeter Swans in Stratford. Finally, I found birds worth looking at! Hopefully, these will hold up and not be escapees. I was driving to pick up a pizza, which took me past a small pond on the Stratford/Shelton line (actually in Stratford), when I noticed two non-Mute swans. I figured they were Tundras, based only on location. I quickly called a few people, and we agreed that these two swans were indeed Trumpeter swans. I know he had them a...

2010 US Road Trip and Other Bird MoJo. Thursday, May 28, 2009. Before and after Migration. And what was that, you ask? The mass migration of hundreds of bird species flying thousands of miles to their summer breeding grounds. Colorful warblers fliter and bug catch in habitats they wouldn't breed in. Uncommon ducks begin to be seen in local ponds and bays. And they skies become spotted as large amounts of hawks lazily list north on high altitude thermals. I had gone to a sanctary about 40 minutes from my ...

2010 US Road Trip and Other Bird MoJo. Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Unbelievable. You'd think after Alaska they would get there shit together. They can spend billions on nonsensical technology ( iPad. For one.), yet. Find a way to safely. Of times have ships navigated everywhere? To me, this really angers me for 3 reasons. 1) The most obvious, the wildlife of the Gulf. 2) Obama thinks it's a good idea to do MORE drilling. 3) My first encounter of the Gulf Coast in TX and LA will surely not be as expected.

2010 US Road Trip and Other Bird MoJo. Saturday, January 30, 2010. To GPS or not to GPS. Another decision I need to make is whether or not to purchase a navigation system for my pick-up truck. I have a good sense of direction, and have maps and atlas' coming out the wazoo. I drove from Stratford, CT to Fairbanks, Alaska using just one Atlas. one that had roads for Mexico, the US, and Canada. That atlas and a compass. I actually prefer to do it 'old school', if you will. Or should I get the GPS? Milford a...

2010 US Road Trip and Other Bird MoJo. Monday, May 24, 2010. Time to get a trip bird list. After camping and driving, A LOT (3900 miles so far), plus poor weather here near Mt. Rushmore, I have time to get a updated trip list up. To put it very bluntly, these past 2 weeks have been stupid hectic, so actually resting on a bed and typing is relaxing. Here is what I've gotten so far (again, going by Sibley's taxonomy):. Great Egret (seen near CT/NY border. still counts! Golden Eagle (3 so far). Sharp-tailed...

2010 US Road Trip and Other Bird MoJo. Monday, May 24, 2010. Howdy from Rapid City, SD. Do You Ooze Confidence? Some people just ooze with confidence! I’m sure you have bumped into them or maybe you are one of them. What can we attribute it to? Are they of the Bubbly Blue personality or the Forward Red? Sometimes the quietest person can have the greatest self esteem and oozing confidence. 1 When greeting others, look them in the eye and smile big. A friendly smiling person always lends a bright moment to someones day. It conveys I am happy, I like myself, and I like you! When my daughter wa...
