Macclesfield Canal, bridge 30

http://macclesfieldcanal.org.uk/br30.htm

Bridge 30, Wood's. Other places along the canal:. For places of interest away from the canal look at Offline interests. Bridge 30, Wood's. Bridge 30 was, by the early 1980's, in a totally derelict state. It was only by luck that the arch had not been damaged and it was still possible to cross it on foot. If modern standards of safety had prevailed then, it would probably have been closed to the public. Matching stone and, in particular, coping stones were required and these were collected from a number o...

Macclesfield Canal

http://macclesfieldcanal.org.uk/milestones.htm

The milestones along the Macclesfield Canal are notable for a number of reasons - they are beautifully made from Kerridge stone, they are very large, they were lost, and now they are fully restored. There are 27 one mile stones and there were 78 much smaller quarter mile stones, many of the latter having been lost. The one mile stones were lost because at the start of WWII they were buried in order to remove any indication that could assist enemy troops in finding their way. Last updated 18 November, 2014.

Happy Valley; Origins

http://happy-valley.org.uk/history/misc-origin.htm

From the mists of time . Origins of the name. There is no certainty about how Bollington got its name but there are a few theories! It is possible that folk didn't realise that it was the Macclesfield branch that retained the name Bollin - this in times when folk didn't travel much and were unsure of the topography. An extension to this idea is that it is possible that both branches had the same name at one time. The next idea is that there was a chap called Bolla who set up home here,. So why the river.
