Built the Stone Cottage between 1879-1889. The stone blocks were quarried from the site and, where protected by the verandahs, have retained their original colour. The timber is also of local origin and the roofing of English iron. Johann Schaefer came to Australia in the barque Caesar which brought a full complement of German immigrants from Hamburg in 1855. His wife accompanied him and they lived at Broadwater and Woombah before purchasing this land from George Watson in 1879.

A collection of over 7000 photographs is housed on site and will also be transferred to computer. Photocopies can be made or photographic copies can be arranged (cost on application). Newspaper cuttings and a variety of documents are stored in filing cabinets with the material in cardboard wallets alphabetically arranged for easy access and dealing with people, buildings, organizations and subjects like fishing, shipping, sport etc. Maps, plans, posters etc. are stored flat in large drawers.

The Daily Examiner on April 30 posted a story about the successful tenderer for the new Harwood Bridge- construction starting exactly 50 years after the opening of the current bridge (seen below) on 20th August 1966. Our newsletter for June 2016 will try to tell a little of the story of ferries and the building of bridges to replace them, an interesting history.
