Guihot's in Beijing: January 2010

Saturday, January 2, 2010. Winding Down and Ramping Up. All the while dinner was being hoed down the waiter service were really keeping on the ball, also making it some of the best local table service I've received here. I never seemed to notice them come and take plates away or need to be called but my wineglass was never empty and the plates of food just kept on coming. Snow Halloween Too Much Time = Snow Witch. Southern Gate of the Forbidden City, day after Halloween. Maddy and Santa at the lighting o...

Guihot's in Beijing: December 2011

Monday, December 12, 2011. The Free Market Sucker-Punch. It was a game that I had played many times since moving to Beijing, and one that I knew would be played out again today. The aim of the game for me seems simple – track down a particular recipe ingredient that, while not part of the usual Chinese fare, isn't exactly a rarity in most supermarkets in the west. In a model reminiscent of “whatever falls off the back of the truck”, it’s less menu planning and more pot luck. BUT transfer this to Beijing,...

Guihot's in Beijing: October 2009

Wednesday, October 28, 2009. The Other Long March (Part 1: The Warm-up). I know I’ve said we’ve been busy before, but the last 6 weeks really have been something else. With Mum and Dad in town for 5 of those weeks and plenty of travel done for both work and play there are plenty of stories to tell. So much so, that we’ve again had to resort to sharing the tales over three posts. Well, onwards and upwards! Welcome to the Jungle. With Amy having flown out to Xingjiang on the Wednesday morning for work Madd...

Friday, October 1, 2010. Progress: The Enemy at the Gates. Sanlitun Apple store this week - the iPad and iPhone 4 had arrived. It wasn’t really a surprise then to discover last night that the scaffolding has moved into the old street, and the next phase of Beijing’s modernisation had commenced. It was no less disappointing though, and a tad sad. Why? The scaffolding has arrived. Does it signal the end to this last section of Sanlitun with old Beijing character? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Put together an...

Guihot's in Beijing: The Amazing Beijing Adventure Race
http://guihots-in-beijing.blogspot.com/2011/04/amazing-beijing-adventure-race.html
Sunday, April 10, 2011. The Amazing Beijing Adventure Race. The aim of the game: to have the most points at the end of the race, and be back in enough time to not loose more points than you gained (as teams lost points at an every increasing rate the later they were back after the 6hr mark). Amy with the Lego Man of Solana (3rd checkpoint). Out the front of Chaoyang Park's south gate for a quick photo. (4th checkpoint). I also played Jianzi (Chinese hackysack). Nearing the end of the race at Jingshan Park.

Guihot's in Beijing: September 2009
http://guihots-in-beijing.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Wednesday, September 9, 2009. Jesus Christ, where did the 6 weeks go since the last time I posted an update here? So, how did the last 45 days really go? While I am not usually a big fan of the Chinese architecture, this particular padoga in Zhongshan Park is one of my favourites. Now wouldn't that make an impressive BBQ gazebo? The canal running in front of the Forbidden City was busy with families and couples in small electric boats. Look at the butterfly :-). Reece Guihot, Porne King. It was a lot of ...

Guihot's in Beijing: August 2010

Sunday, August 1, 2010. China’s Journey into World Expo Land – Opportunity Lost? It’s been a long time between jottings here on the blog (Chinese New Year in Hong Kong being the last one). Slackness you may say? That said though, work actually got hectic there for a while with the end of financial year stuff, and before that I was spending a lot of time trying to come up with lame excuses to explain my lack of blogging. The Guihot Family Expo. When we finally made it to Shanghai it was like walking out o...

Saturday, February 13, 2010. Espresso Martinis, Kiwi Sorbet and the Sub-Arctic Tourist Express. Thanks to some 007 drinking memories from our Aussie trip (in particular our great catch-up with friends on our 2nd night back in Oz for my best friend's birthday) we had the lingering taste sensation of Espresso Martinis on our lips so the recipe was looked up and the necessary brewing of beans cooked and cooled in preparation for what we hoped would be a nice night with friends. The Flying Family Visit.
