The Mad Gnomes Strike Again! Two mad gnomes and a big garden. The Veggie Gnome does the edible stuff, the Berry Gnome the berries and taties. Wednesday, 27 February 2013. First apples of the season. Galas Super juicy, sweet and crisp. Absolutely delicious. Excuse me, I have to go and eat another apple! Oh, thats pretty. I wish now wed planted an apple tree. The Mad Gnomes Strike Again! Two mad gnomes and a big garden. The Veggie Gnome does the edible stuff, the Berry Gnome the berries and taties. Wednesday, 5 June 2013. Just picked all our persimmons (they are from the certified organic orchard we have taken over). They are looking absolutely gorgeous. There are several varieties, but unfortunately we don't know what they are. They are definitely astringent, that's for sure. Believe me, I tried them all. And I have. We really like them though. Recipe: How T...

The Mad Gnomes Strike Again!: Shade House
http://madgnomes.blogspot.com/2015/01/shade-house.html
The Mad Gnomes Strike Again! Two mad gnomes and a big garden. The Veggie Gnome does the edible stuff, the Berry Gnome the berries and taties. Friday, 2 January 2015. Summer has struck with a vengeance. 42C are forecast today. Even when the plants receive enough water (not always the case around here), the sun can burn some of the bigger-leaved plants. Shade houses are a new one on me. I guess that you didnt have sprouts and parsnips on Christmas Day. 3 January 2015 at 4:05 am. 3 January 2015 at 11:12 pm.

Adelaide Kitchen Gardeners: October 2014
http://adelaidegardeners.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
8216;Potting-on’ tomato seedlings. On Monday, October 27, 2014. Labels: how to plant. Mother Nature is taking her own sweet time to finish ending the broad-bean crop in the garden bed in which I’m planning to raise this year’s tomatoes. I’m going to have to ‘. 8217; to tide me over for another week or two until I can get in there and prepare their new home…. This is a simple-enough process, though it’s hard to toss out young seedlings as ruthlessly as this job demands. Posted by Veggie Gnome. Fortunately...

http://kitchengardeninfrance.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Kitchen Garden in France. Wednesday, February 8, 2012. A few Garden Birds. My neighbour Michael has taken the opportunities presented by our recent snowfall to take yet more amazing photographs. This time he has compiled a set of the most amazing pictures of our garden birds. Please enjoy them, and, once again, a big thank you to Michael, for making them available to me for our enjoyment. Monday, February 6, 2012. Whole of my garden white. Dazzlingly white! Now, I know that to many of you 6” of sn...

Kitchen Garden in France: Spring at last
http://kitchengardeninfrance.blogspot.com/2013/04/spring-at-last.html
Kitchen Garden in France. Monday, April 15, 2013. The winter here in south west France has dragged on a bit this year, with the cold and wet weather extending into the beginning of this month. However, the last couple of weeks have brought some spring weather with them and, suddenly, things are bursting into flower. These tulips are in a small flower bed right next to the main door to the house, so, although Tulips are short lived, I get to enjoy them everday whilst they are in bloom. In the orchard, the...

Nic's Patch: June 2009
http://nicspatch.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
My not so exciting ventures into gardening, self sufficiency, getting solar electricity and hot water and pretty much life in general in a small country town . Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Finally can report progress with the big vegie patch! On Saturday 8 of the railway sleepers were cut in half by Jon to form the ends and I used full length ones for the sides. Quite a lot of effort to put them into place as each full one weighs between 60 and 70kg so I doubt that they will move around much. I already have a...

My not so exciting ventures into gardening, self sufficiency, getting solar electricity and hot water and pretty much life in general in a small country town . Sunday, May 31, 2009. The Patch at Present. Well this is what I've got at the moment. In the left hand side of the tub are 4 Sugarloaf cabbages and in the right, 3 Cauliflower and 1 Brocoli. Hiding amongst the mulch at the back are celery seedlings. There is a mix of Sugarloaf cabbage and cauliflowers in this bed. In front of the peas are more bro...

Kitchen Garden in France: April 2012
http://kitchengardeninfrance.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Kitchen Garden in France. Sunday, April 1, 2012. A couple of months ago I was writing on here about the unexpected snowfall. In that post I referred to my potted herbs collection as “looking particularly forlorn”. It turns out that statement was “particularly inadequate”! 160; With the exception of my rosemary and sage bushes, all the rest of my herb collection has been completely wiped out. I’m still hoping that the rosemary and sage will survive and they are showing great promise. A consequence of th...

Kitchen Garden in France. Tuesday, February 18, 2014. More about the Nesting Box. I don’t know much about the habits of tits when looking for nesting sites but I’m hopeful that my box wil prove attractive to one and am reassured by this early visit. I have also hung 5 different bird feeders in my fig tree, all of which I can see from my chair on the terrace and all of which I enjoy watching. Please support . National Nest Box Week. Kitchen Garden in France: July 2011
http://kitchengardeninfrance.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Kitchen Garden in France. Friday, July 15, 2011. My friend Michael has been out and about again, shooting wildlife. In a country that takes any form of hunting very seriously and the quiet of a Sunday morning is peppered with the sounds of gunshots, Michael always enjoys telling people he's been out shooting wildlife, only to later clarify that the only shooting he ever does is with his camera. He emailed these photos to me, this morning. Labels: la vie Francais. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Scroll down t...

Do They Taste Light? Posted by Mad G. Tuesday, August 5, 2008. My previous post was about the fact that C.elegans. Were sensitive to UV light. What made this more interesting was the protein that was discovered as responsible for this special character. Conventional studies in these nematodes by Stacey L. Edwards, Kenneth G. Miller, and colleagues allowed them to identify a protein as being behind this interesting property. They called it, lite-1. Did act as receptor for UV light. Links to this post.
