Oh Praso, Oh Praso | The Power of Hope

The Power of Hope. The views here do not necessarily represent the views of St Pauls University College, University of Waterloo, WUSC, or my host organization. Placement: A.R.E. March 12, 2013. Oh Praso, Oh Praso. Oh Praso Oh Praso, the town I now call home. At 5am, the animals awake and start to roam. On every corner, and every road, there is a sound. As entrepreneurs sell and bustle around. The music playing is often very loud. But it is the pulse to ones heartbeat that keeps us bound. We are all a par...

Laura en Latinoamérica: Journal, March 25

Monday, 8 April 2013. Journal, March 25. I do not exaggerate the plight of Afro-Peruvian women in order to victimize them; nor do I want to romanticize their lives and paint them as being happy despite their poverty. They have great ambitions for their lives, families, and communities, and they are moving and shaking society with their powerfully strategic campaigns. Being honest about the enormity of their challenges makes their success all the more impressive. One of my principal questions going into t...

Saturday, 8 September 2012. It's hard to believe that I leave for Peru on Monday! August was a whirlwind of road trips to Wyoming and Winnipeg, and I arrived back in Waterloo last weekend with a mile-long to-do list. But ready or not, on Monday I'll be rolling out of bed before sunrise to catch an early morning flight to Lima, Peru. So tonight I'm enjoying some quality time with my family, and the rest of my packing will have to wait until tomorrow. It will all get done, right? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Laura en Latinoamérica: November 2012
http://laurainlatinamerica.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Monday, 19 November 2012. Journal, November 19. Last weekend, CEDEMUNEP received a distressed phone call from Carmen. The young rape victim who we have been accompanying over the last few months. Through her tears, Carmen explained that on Wednesday, she was to participate in the Reconstruccion de los Hechos. While I am a strong proponent of Restorative Justice. Must victims be re-victimized by the criminal justice system? In light of Restorative Justice Week. While it seems like Peru is impossibly far a...

Tuesday, 12 March 2013. Journal, March 11. 8220;Statistics is both a science and an art,” explained Dr. Woudsma in second-year Advanced Environmental Research Methods. While we learned in depth about the scientific side of statistics from his lectures in ENVS 278, my field placement has “coloured” in my understanding of the more artistic side of real, on-the-ground social research. And the Washington D.C.-based capacity building NGO, Global Rights. Which has been accompanying us for several years. Highli...
