We raise a small flock of Shetland and Rambouillet sheep on our farm in Madison County, Virginia. We shear the sheep on the farm in the spring. Our hats and rugs are all handmade from the Shetland wool of our flock. The wool never leaves our farm until it is sold. We wash our wool in moderately hot water so that we retain alot of the lanolin. After the wool is washed, we dye it. Some colors are natural dyes, but we also use synthetic colors. The donkeys trudge along with the sheep, and although they would be just as happy at home with the hay, they are part of the sheep community, and know they have to go. Coyotes are around but the sight of the donkeys send them off to food with fewer problems involved. The goats love the trek because the woodlots keep them at their browse. December 31, 2010. Hello, welcome to our farm world! We have a sustainable sheep and vegetable farm that we are for ever developing in Madison County. The majority of our wool we wash, dye some of it, pick, card, and create our stuff. We try to use very little grain, so we breed our sheep to lamb in the late Spring when the grass is lush and we do not flush them before breeding, hoping for singles or twins.
