Mad Scientist at Large: September 2013

http://madscientistatlarge.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html

Mad Scientist at Large. Friday, September 13, 2013. Quick Test of Geophone Response. I just wanted to post a quick article about geophones. Geophones are essentially instruments that allow us to measure the velocity or acceleration of the ground. Yes, seismometers do this, but generally when we refer to geophones we are talking about single sensor (almost always vertical sensing) devices used for seismic imaging in oil/gas exploration. I've talked about seismic surveys before ( here. I've also included t...

Mad Scientist at Large. Sunday, May 27, 2012. Teaching Field Camp Week 1 - Norman, OK. The next objective was to collect a seismic line over a branch of the fault system that slipped during the earthquake sequence of November 2011 in central Oklahoma. Setting out a seismic line is a long, arduous task, so the students needed a practice day. We setup a short ( 300m) line by the school's duck pond. Below is a time-lapse video I took of the practice session on Tuesday. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Mad Scientist at Large: Texas Fertilizer Plant Explosion Shakes the Ground

http://madscientistatlarge.blogspot.com/2013/04/texas-fertilizer-plant-explosion-shakes.html

Mad Scientist at Large. Thursday, April 18, 2013. Texas Fertilizer Plant Explosion Shakes the Ground. The best video I've seen so far is attached below, the explosion happens around 30 seconds in. Also below is the initial emergency services traffic. Very quickly and the large explosion in a period of around 10 seconds. If you want to look at the data yourself I've made the SAC file available here. Or you can download the data from IRIS and duplicate the filtering with the following OBSPy code:. From obs...

Mad Scientist at Large. Sunday, December 30, 2012. The 4-Hour Work Week" - Thoughts on the Best Selling Book. In a best selling book " The 4-Hour Work Week. Author Tim Ferriss argues for working less and experiencing life more. While this concept is intriguing and what many corporate types long for, I was curious if and how Mr. Ferriss' ideas could convert over to academia. Is it because we are addicted to work? For example, sending out a dozen "check up" emails that don't really need to be sent or could...

Interpretations of a geological geophysicist. How do we know if an earthquake is tectonic or anthropogenic? As I scroll through memories to file them away in the limited catalog that is my brain, I’m reminded of a question I once posed during a seminar presentation. The presentation was by one of the research committee. Members that was commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy to study human-induced seismicity. Done in June 2012. When the presentation. When Rangley, Colorado. Suddenly became seismic...
