Maggie au Niger

Monday, May 26, 2008. Ann and my friend Mariama in the Abalak weekly market on our fun trip up North. Me and one of Mariama’s aunts in Tuareg garb at the family house in Konni (I realize these town names don’t mean much unless you are looking at a detailed map of Niger, but just in case you are). Ann and me with our fav fried food, fermented rice pancakes (called massa) and squash sauce. Pretty Niamey sky from my backyard. Checking in before checking out. I’m leaving Niamey on May 31 and headed off...

Maggie au Niger: I'm MELTING!

http://maggieauniger.blogspot.com/2008/04/im-melting.html

Monday, April 28, 2008. Anyway my brain is fried so here are some pictures instead of stories, hope you enjoy:. Kind of a not attractive photo of me, but voila moi et Alice the other Fulbrighter, with my sweet Chadian henna, taken right before I went to Dakar to see the Fick family. With Ashley, yawning like the hippos on the river. Cool handmade pots in the Ayerou market NW of Niamey, we watched these pots be made by women on an island in the Niger river near Ayerou. Some fabric (from Mali/Guinea? Fick ...

Maggie au Niger: musings from the gutter

http://maggieauniger.blogspot.com/2008/05/musings-from-gutter.html

Friday, May 2, 2008. Musings from the gutter. Last night I had a funny experience that I thought would be fun to relate. It started with dinner with some friends at a little bar overlooking the Niger river. After dinner I left my friends there and headed out by myself (I was in a hurry to go somewhere, you know, I'm often in a hurry, not a good thing). I hope I don't fall in the sewer again. But I am now cleaner than I have been in months, alhumdillilahi! Cheers et bon week-end,. You felt no wonder.

Thursday, April 24, 2008. That's a big prob here, not only in cities, sadly in villages and all throughout the country. The Rwandan govt outlawed the use of black plastic bags, seems like a brilliant idea to me). All of us, plus our great guides Alhmoud and Issafou, at the park's entrance. Splish splash they were takin a bath! You gotta love this giraffe! Finally, at a millet beer bar in Niamey, with Seydou the serenader.my Nigerien name Fatimata sounds really great when belted out by this dude. April 28,...

http://maggieauniger.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 14, 2007. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). WELCOME to my Blog :). For my Fulbright research grant, I'll be living in Niger from mid- September 2007 - June 2008. I'll be researching gender roles in the Tuareg ethnic group, working with a women's rights NGO (called Tin Hinan), learning Tamashek (the language of the Tuaregs), and generally soaking up life in Niger to the fullest. Thanks for checking up on me and I hope to be in touch often! Click here for Niger News:. An All-Niger news site.

The Sasshole: SOTU tonight. 9pm.

http://thesasshole.blogspot.com/2008/01/sotu-tonight-9pm.html

SOTU tonight. 9pm. Bush's last State of the Union. Believe it or not, even though nobody can shut up about Clinton and Obama. Neither has been elected yet, and Americans have one more opportunity to be reminded that G-Dubs is still our Commander-in-Chief. Tonight, though, I imagine we'll hear a collective sigh resounding through the nation, "Thank God his presidency is almost over! Let's review highlights from the State of the Union speeches over his previous 7 years. Championing "No Child Left Behind".

The Sasshole: One (More) Song, Glory

http://thesasshole.blogspot.com/2008/01/one-more-song-glory.html

One (More) Song, Glory. After a nearly twelve-year run in the Nederland theater, RENT is taking its final curtain call. Was it beyond our maturity level at 13? So, with many fond memories of Roger, Mimi, Mark, Angel, and the rest of the gang, I bid adieu to my first favorite stage drama. "We raise our glass, you bet your ass, to. la Vie Boheme! The Sasshole: Change is in the Air.

http://thesasshole.blogspot.com/2008/11/change-is-in-air.html

Change is in the Air. The election results have finally sunk in. We're going to have a President Obama. I thought I would post an email that I wrote to my brother on November 5, 2008. I think it sums up what I was feeling right after the election: shock, delight, hope, anticipation, patriotism, pride, joy. Here it is, unchanged:. It was unbelievable. The city was SO electric. Everyone really senses that change is in the air! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Obligatory "About Me".

The Sasshole: Done and DONE!!

http://thesasshole.blogspot.com/2008/06/done-and-done.html

LSAT = out of my life. Booyeah. I am slightly overwhelmed at the prospect of having more free time than I know what to do with, now that the 1.5 months of studying are behind me. Finally I can rid myself of the guilt complex that I had every time I would go to happy hour, thinking "damn, I should be reviewing right now.". I think I shall fill the time drinking heavily. And riding the sweet new bike. And perhaps just sitting on my butt. Doing crossword puzzles. I cultivated to perfection at Pomona.

The Sasshole: Facebook Mystifies Me...

http://thesasshole.blogspot.com/2008/02/facebook-mystifies-me.html

Wow, so, just when I thought I had the hang of these crazy techmologies, someone throws a wrench in the works and screws everything up. Basically, I'm still pissed at Facebook for adding a bazillion and one useless applications. Currently, I have TWENTY FOUR pending requests to join groups ranging from "Which Foreign Guy Should You Date? I'm still intrigued by what the "Are You Interested? Application could possibly mean, but I'm not entirely sure it's G-rated. Does anyone understand them? Sigh Back in M...

The Sasshole: How Much Do You Wish You Were in Brazil?

http://thesasshole.blogspot.com/2008/01/how-much-do-you-wish-you-were-in-brazil.html

How Much Do You Wish You Were in Brazil? So I stumbled across this video which has left me alternately giggling quite loudly and scratching my head. Apparently there is a dance trend spreading like wildfire across Brazil called the funk da. A Somehow this became immortalized via YouTube. As a coordinated boy band-style routine by some teens with clearly too much time on their hands. . I simply cannot imagine how this came about: were all these fourteen year olds. What if we filmed it! Catchy - my fav.
