Sitting Under a Baobob

Sitting Under a Baobob. Standard of Living UPGRADE. Mango season has come and past; though that isn’t the only change that has happened since my last post. My mom and sister came in May, which was so refreshing. I feel so blessed to have gotten to share this experience with them. They were instant celebrities in Jali village and will surely be the “talk of the town” for years to come. So many wonderful moments with them! They even learned some Mandinka- SUMOLU LEE? Yes, the home people are here only!

Sitting Under a Baobob: April 2009

http://maggiegambia.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Sitting Under a Baobob. I've been told not to set my expectations too high, but it's hard, and I'd like to think optimistically. At this point, I want to try everything I can! My job is to seek out motivated individuals, and at that point, I think the direction of my service will become clearer. That seems to be the dream of any young girl or boy: getting out of this country. Can you blame them? Why can’t it be Kasam who changes this country around instead of his children? This is my home. I came back fr...

Sitting Under a Baobob: Kwasa

http://maggiegambia.blogspot.com/2010/04/kwasa.html

Sitting Under a Baobob. Tonight is my last night in town until next month when my MOTHER and SISTER are coming to visit! On my last night before heading back to Jali. I always like to eat a really nice meal- tonight: barracuda and salad! The "restaurant" we went to had a big sign at the entrance. TRY A NEW FOOD- KWASA. I like trying new foods.so order a Kwasa. Excited to try something new and exciting! Minutes later comes a croissant. On a plate. I guess Kwasa. Kind of sounds like croissant. I hear padde...

Sitting Under a Baobob: April 2010

http://maggiegambia.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Sitting Under a Baobob. Digging the wells deeper after some problems with them drying up this year. Nothing better than fresh honey comb with bees still in it. Beekeeping at Siffoe Peace Corps In-training. Look at that uncapped honey :). At the Samateh's. The kids were literally eating clay. Women fetching water for their garden beds. Tonight is my last night in town until next month when my MOTHER and SISTER are coming to visit! On my last night before heading back to Jali. On a plate. I guess Kwasa.

Sitting Under a Baobob: Lizard in my sheets, chick in my backyard, and the Jali massage parlor

http://maggiegambia.blogspot.com/2010/04/lizard-in-my-sheets-chick-in-my.html

Sitting Under a Baobob. Lizard in my sheets, chick in my backyard, and the Jali massage parlor. Each day is filled with hundreds of moments that make me smile, laugh, and really appreciate my life here. Here are some highlights from my journal this month. The back massage: While in South Africa, the physical therapist gave me some stretches to strengthen. Was sulking. "I went to the hospital last week to get medicine, but it's not helping my pain- ing. With 24-hour electricity (aka 24-hour ice) This time...

Sitting Under a Baobob: November 2009

http://maggiegambia.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Sitting Under a Baobob. The past few weeks have been a busy time in village. The rainy season is over and harvesting is in full bloom, so everyone has been out in the rice, peanut, millet, and findo farms collecting their crops. It's tiring, but more rewarding than plowing and weeding because you can see you're labor actually paying off! Me: "In America, people are often too busy to take care of their parents, so there are homes that only old people live in.". How can you just leave them alone? Me: "When...

Maggie Gallant: Actor and Writer

52 is the new 51. Monday January 1, 2018. I have just had a birthday and am now of an age where it’s impossible to grumble about it without someone feeling the need to tell me that ‘age is just a number’. Although this is factually correct it is rarely meant just as a statement of fact. It’s an admonishment usually delivered by some […]. Read More ». 52 is the new 51. I would walk 5(00) miles.
