You probably don't remember this, but back in 2009, I had two colonoscopies in one summer. And because the pricing was radically weird, because one of them happened in the hospital and the other in the doctor's office, I had to write about it. Go on, read about it. Come back when you're done. A couple of years later, Elisabeth Rosenthal (a writer for the Times) started a series of investigative articles about medical care pricing, called Paying Till It Hurts. Her first piece was about . colonoscopies.

My Blue Plate Special. When I first heard about Blue Apron, I was intrigued - partly because back in the carefree days when we had no kid there was a company called Impromptu Gourmet that sold dinner kits, chef-designed do-it-yourself dinner kits. In the past couple of years, a few new companies have sprung up, providing the same kind of dinner kits, but on a subscription basis. That makes it a lot easier to predict demand, so they can tailor their supply chain and have everything come out even at th...

What The Parents Do When The Kid Is Away. We dropped the child off at camp today. It took an hour and half to get there, because she was not interested in dawdling. It took us three and a half hours to get home because it was a beautiful day and we stopped for lunch in one little town and stopped for ice cream in another little town and detoured to Goshen, NY to bear witness to the impending dismantling and "renovation". Of the Orange County Government Center. Enjoy this time. And feel this time. I like ...

You Want to Know How Much A Colonoscopy Costs? I’m as confused as the next person about health care reform - but I know we need it; it’s completely bat-shit crazy the way it is now. In my heart of hearts, I think we should have a one-payer socialized system, and I'm disappointed that the “public option” may be dropped from the current attempt at health care reform. I compiled the numbers for the two colonoscopies and I’m kind of flabbergasted. 1 in the hospital. Charges billed by doctors and hospital.

All I Want For Christmas. Last Thursday was Thanksgiving. Then came the shopping mayhem days: Black Friday and Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Today's Giving Tuesday, a day to make a difference. And, though you're surely inundated by pleas from this great organization and that terrific non-profit, let me tug a little at your heartstrings. Since sometime in the last century, more than 18 years if you really want to know, I've worked at a small awesome unique. Do you have $13 to spare? Think of a...

Them's My Sentiments: September 2013
http://themsmysentiments.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, 26 September 2013. No More Pine Tree. The pine tree perch for the wireless node has been superceded by a genuine, bolted to the rock tower. Here you see the intrepid climber fastening the last piece in place. We are all hoping that the next storm will not cause any more fried electronics - the tower is grounded! And here are the crazy climbing guys mugging for the camera. I can't believe there is no camera shake in this one, as the pair of them were terrifying me. Links to this post.

Them's My Sentiments: Dogged
http://themsmysentiments.blogspot.com/2015/07/dogged.html
Tuesday, 21 July 2015. Note to readers: this blog is in large part a record for my granddaughter and so this is a long and somewhat tedious catalogue of life-with-dogs as a record for her. Feel free to quit reading after four paragraphs. A policeman arrived to investigate and I took him to the kitchen to see Rusty who, shameless beggar that he was, lay down on his back and waved four paws at the cop, inviting a belly rub. End of incident. One spring night we arrived at our rural property and he wrenched ...

Thoughts from what's left of my brain. The little red dot on my telephone indicated a message was waiting. I’d put my phone on silence during a meeting, and the breaks were so busy that I didn’t even check. I rarely get calls, so sometimes I forget to monitor the phone. If you ever leave me a message, don’t count on me getting it right away. Email is a much swifter way to reach me. I dialed in to the voicemail and there was Buddy-roo. 8216;s signature greeting, “. As for the parents involved, they are bo...
Rockin’ Together | Maternal Dementia

Thoughts from what's left of my brain. I used to pay attention to new artists and new music. In a previous life I went to a lot of clubs and concerts, and learned about bands before they were big names. My college roommate – we both started out working in rock’n’roll radio – is still friends with musicians that most people only. When I have time. When I have time. Being the operative phrase. Still, my music playlists are seriously outdated. A song, she has to get my permission (and my iTunes code) becaus...

Thoughts from what's left of my brain. My de-facto husband would be a good husband. He is, effectively, just. A husband. Except we’re not married. It? S not because we? Re opposed to it; we just haven’t gotten around to it. When people ask me why we? Re not married, I should say it? S none of their business. But I? M usually too polite, so I tell them we? Re just waiting for the kids to get old enough to pay for our wedding reception. She adds and subtracts names at will. To the theme of. I knew her firs...

My Level of Awareness. 8220;Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them.” – Albert Einstein. One of the earliest people that encouraged my blog was a fellow scientist mom Whymommy of Toddler Planet. We had chosen different paths in our efforts to balance motherhood and career and it was refereshing to compare notes. She is a scientist with NASA, and the mother of two young boys whose ages bracket my son’s. Her fight has tapped deep into the wellspring of my worst fears.

Wednesday, August 26, 2015. A report on salt. A few years ago, my sis and her husband gave us a cool collection of salts for Christmas. We use Maldon. Salt as our daily salt so my sis knew we’d enjoy trying other kinds of salt. Then we moved and honestly I forgot about the salt—it sat in the back of a cabinet after we moved from Boston to Overland Park, and moved again to our home in Leawood. But when I was organizing our kitchen cabinets a la KonMarie. I’m not a fan of most smoked flavors so the n...

The random ramblings of a magpie mind
The random ramblings of a magpie mind. Monday, 27 July 2015. On bended wing they swoop low, skimming waves;. Their mournful cries a perfect foil for the jingle jangle of pier head rides. They are the post sitters, people watchers. Still as statue fortune tellers who wait, with baited breath for picnics to appear. Then, with one mad dash and scramble they strike. Swooping on unsuspecting chip eaters, sandwich snackers, beach sitters. To snatch at tasty morsels from reluctant givers. The end of the pier.
