Magpie Wines

Journey of classic Grapes to Great Wine! Sunday, January 2, 2011. VINEYARD PRUNING and TRELLIS SYSTEMS. We have to prune our vines twice every year, to achieve and regulate systematic removal of wood in a manner that will result in a strong plant convenient shape and good crops of large clusters. Pruning operation influences grape than any other methods. To make Pruning activity efficient, we follow different TRELLIS SYSTEMS. Most, we choose an essentially stronger shoot as our Primary. Magpie Wines: February 2010

http://www.magpiewines.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Journey of classic Grapes to Great Wine! Tuesday, February 23, 2010. STEP 3 - THE ROOTSTOCKS. The usage of Rootstocks, especially the " Dog Ridge. Variety emerged in USA when a pest Phylloxera destroyed most of Vineyards. We use Rootstocks as base plants on which the actual scion (cutting of Wine varietal plant) is " grafted. The other way to setup a Vineyard is by using " own-roots. Which means that we plant the scion directly into soil. 1) This rootstock has strong resistance. 3) A rootstock can. This ...

Journey of classic Grapes to Great Wine! Thursday, March 18, 2010. STEP 4 - GRAFTING. Welcome to the exciting world of Vine-Grafting. Simply put, we club 2 grape varietals together -i.e., we use the existing Rootstock (see a detailed previous blog on Rootstocks) and graft a new Wine varietal to it. The Wine varietal can be your choice - of course based on terrior observations. So here we go! Ons I am consulting with Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru. I have chosen SHIRAZ / SYRAH.

Once the rootstocks are grafted with vine cuttings (in our case - SHIRAZ and CHENIN BLANC) as we saw in our previous article, it becomes important that we setup a Nursery. To house some rootstocks that may come handy to fill gaps - wherever the grafting has failed. For this, we first make the " cuttings. Ready which has at least 3 nodes. To setup a Nursery:. 1) Choose a reasonably flat land. Nursery needs to be supplied wi...

Magpie Wines: December 2010

Journey of classic Grapes to Great Wine! Saturday, December 4, 2010. SPRAYING and WEED CONTROL. Any Vineyard's major challenge lies in controlling the pest/fungal attacks that occurs at regular intervals. This needs to be controlled at the right moment, which otherwise can directly effect the quality of grapes. Yellow Rust and Downy Mildew(which often is a weather driven disease) are noticeable on foliage (leaves) and will need immediate attention, failing which entire Vineyards can get quickly affected.

Journey of classic Grapes to Great Wine! Sunday, November 15, 2009. Step 1 - MARKING, TRENCHING and DRIP IRRIGATION. Our first in series of " SETTING UP A VINEYARD. Begins with MARKING, TRENCHING and DRIP IRRIGATION. Is more to design the way, how the futuristic Vineyard will take its course! Is an immediate activity done after marking the land with lines defined to grow grape vines. We dig trenches of 1-2 feet deep all along the line marked for 2 good reasons. Saturday, November 14, 2009. YOUR FIRST STE...

Magpie Writes

Wednesday, March 22, 2017. SoI got a book deal. What actually happens when what you've been working toward for six years—no, longer— happens? It seems sudden and unbelievable. I have trouble reminding myself that it is true. But I've seen the evidence of my own eyes, so I guess it really is happening. I have an editor. I will get published. My book will become real. All I can say is that it. I wish you guys todo la suerte,. Posted by Alex Villasante. Monday, May 9, 2016. A Bumper Sticker and Diversity.
