What is a fern? Ferns have leaves, stems and roots with conducting (vascular) tissue. Leaves are usually large (megaphylls) and are called fronds. All vascular plants including ferns have an alternation of generations. Ferns can be traced back almost 400 million years to the Lower Devonian period and became very abundant 360 million years ago in the Carboniferous period. Ferns today (phylum Pterophyta).
