Under the Act the Board is accountable to the Minister of Maori Affairs and not the beneficiaries of the Board; therefore the Board does not have the political mandate of the people, except in the sense that board members are elected by the people and all Marae have a voice on the Board through their elected Regional Management Committee representatives. We take time out of our busy-ness to visit new places, to learn more about one another and to have fun! Twice a year we visit the traditional rohe (homelands) of two of our Iwi Members to learn about their respective histories, whakapapa (how we all connect), aspirations and fisheries projects. We manage 16,000 tonne of fish on behalf of our Iwi Members. ACE (Annual Catch Entitlement) refers to fishing rights that derive from underlying quota shares. ACE entitles its holder to harvest a set volume of fish species from a specific geographical area around the coast of New Zealand known as a “Fisheries Management Area”. ACE volumes are set by the Minister of Fisheries (MPI) annually and fluctuate depending on a number of factors including the sustainability of the species.

Governance and leadership is an important part of fisheries. The ICP is governed by a board of 6 directors appointed by our 15 Iwi Members. Three directors are appointed by the three largest Iwi Members by quota volume in recognition of the value that these Iwi contribute to the collective. The remaining three directors are appointed by the remaining 12 Iwi Members. Director terms are generally for 3 years. Visit to Rangiwaea Marae, Rangiwaea Island, TAURANGA (2012). The philosophy of Te Pukeiti (TPECC) is to foster and nurture the current and evolving needs of Maniapoto whānau. A holistic methodology towards care and education must come from a whānau approach. Maniapoto descendants and other iwi whānau residing in the area will attain knowledge of our rohe, its dialect and protocols. Māori success in education is New Zealand’s success.
