Zener Diode - The Backwards Diode - MakerMastery

http://www.makermastery.com/zener-diode-the-backwards-diode

Zener Diode – The Backwards Diode. Zener diodes work great as a voltage reference, but you’ve got to use them backwards . I often refer to the zener diode as the backwards diode . That’s because they are used backwards of the way regular diodes are used. Regular diodes only allow electricity to flow in one direction, from their anode to their cathode, like this:. This breakdown voltage is exactly what we take advantage of in a zener diode. If you look at the chart of the voltage versus current, you’ll no...

The Story Behind Standard Resistor Values - MakerMastery

http://www.makermastery.com/story-behind-standard-resistor-values

The Story Behind Standard Resistor Values. The electronics industry long ago decided to standardize the values of resistors that they produced. They decided to have different numbers of standard resistors based on the tolerance of the resistors. They did this for one decade (like 100 to 1000) and then used it for other decades (1000 to 10,000; 10,000 to 100,000 and so on). Basically, you take one of these values and you can put any number of zeros behind it and get a valid resistor. You may use these.
