Made Voyages: An interlude in Hertfordshire (August / September 06)
http://madevoyages.blogspot.com/2010/10/interlude-in-hertfordshire-august.html
An interlude in Hertfordshire (August / September 06). August and in gale force winds Brian uses the winches to make the final adjustments to the mooring lines before flying back to the UK. Annette is already back in the UK supporting Laura and James in the final stages of what has proven to be an eventful pregnancy. Training at our steady long distance pace with the packs and equipment we will use in the Himalayas we are an odd couple in the depths of gentile Hertfordshire. We are looking for new commun...

Frantic cleaning and polishing and Excess Line is ready to receive Ethan the Most Excellent and his faithful retainers Laura and James. Useless items such as engine parts, oil, spare pumps, sails and ropes are cleared from lockers which scrubbed and disinfected are packed with Huggies and Pampers. Tunisian people love babies and Ethan thrives on the attention smiling, blowing kisses and the occasional raspberry. Ethan also enjoys his first:-. Dinghy trip to celebrate his Dads birthday. Trip to the beach.

Made Voyages: A Taste of Italy (July 2007)
http://madevoyages.blogspot.com/2010/10/taste-of-italy-july-2007.html
A Taste of Italy (July 2007). Alone again we wait for the Mistral to subside. We are not getting the 55 knot winds which have shrieked down the west coasts of Corsica and Sardinia but few boats are active. A notable exception is a Polish yacht which, in strong winds, is expertly moored alongside us. Including their just completed trip from Cuba the yacht and it's skipper have sailed 250,000 miles. In the soft light which heralds the dawn Lampione and Lampedusa take shape. The sun is just appearing ab...

A Taste of Italy (July 2007). A peaceful star studded night and Annette stays on watch, letting Brian sleep until dozens of lights appear across the horizon. It seems that all the Mediterranean fishermen have converged on the this spot close to Isle Lampione. With the help of chart plotter, radar and c...In th...

Made Voyages: Africa (July / August 06)

Africa (July / August 06). As we arrive a proper gentleman on the deck of an impressive Tunisian motor yacht anchored in the bay treats us to a broad smile and a formal salute. He is pleased to see an English yacht visiting the island, a comparatively rare occurrence. Crystal clear warm water and a bucketful of dramatic island scenery. Hollywood romantic buccaneers. They do exist. Voila! Could have done without the tuna as we have been working our way through our catch. Caught out by the language....

Made Voyages: Himalayan stage race (Oct 2006)
http://madevoyages.blogspot.com/2010/10/himalayan-stage-race-oct-2006.html
Himalayan stage race (Oct 2006). At Mirik we get acclimatised to altitude. Our first attempts to climb the steep steps up to the hotel are laughable. After the race packed with red corpuscles we will skip up them effortlessly, meantime it is painfully slow with frequent stops. A few moments spiritual preparation before the race in the quiet but joyful Buddhist Temple seems entirely right. Relaxed on the start line at Manaybhanjang. We pack and repack rucksacks. One to leave in Mirik. One for the ...At Sa...

Made Voyages: A South West Stroll and a few surprises (May 2007)

A South West Stroll and a few surprises (May 2007). To ensure we do not breach our Tunisian visa we return to the UK. With Paul and Mairi we enjoy exhilarating if damp walks up and around Moel Famau. What little energy remaines is worked off playing Octopush with the Liverpool University team. Down to Devon with Matt and the now blooming Katy (plus one) we walk the last stage of the South West Coastal Path. Click here for video. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Mahon Another place to which we must return. Albert Severo is an interested and interesting sailor who runs a bakery service to the moored boats. Chat amiably, make your order and delicious sailor size croissants, pies, pastries and fresh milk are hung on your guard rail at dawn. Coffee and fresh croissant in the cool of the morning makes the battles with unfavourable winds and uncooperative boat machinery all seem worthwhile. Nice people in Mahon. Made Voyages: Into the new year (Dec 2006 - March 2007)
http://madevoyages.blogspot.com/2010/10/into-new-year-dec-2006-march-2007.html
Into the new year (Dec 2006 - March 2007). After participation in the Grim our next athletic challenges are in February. Damp cold days. Training is scaled down and moved to the centrally heated comfort of Royston Leisure Centre where Sam a member of the training staff provides excellent advice and support. Seasonal sloth and gluttony take their toll and much of January is spent pumping iron or stumbling along the cold, foggy and muddy Hertfordshire trails. A week later we are back in Tunisia. Better...
