Tales of a teacher learning to dressmake
June | 2015 | Making and Marking
http://makingandmarking.com/2015/06
Tales of a teacher learning to dressmake. Monthly Archives: June 2015. Sunday Sevens / 25 2015. A week that passed in the blink of an eye! Sunday Sevens is here to give an insight into seven days in my shoes. Read all about it with Nat at Threads and Bobbins. 1 I had some time to myself last Sunday, so went for a wander down to town in search of sunglasses. 2 The sun made more of an appearance during this week’s dog walks, meaning they feel like so much more of a pleasure than a chore. 3 Time for a trim!
February | 2015 | Making and Marking
http://makingandmarking.com/2015/02
Tales of a teacher learning to dressmake. Monthly Archives: February 2015. For the Love of Lining. Almost two months ago I resolved to improve the finishes. Of my garments. Since then I made two lined Cynthia Rowley dresses that you can read about here. As well as venturing into outwear. I liked wearing my cropped jacket so much that I immediately ordered another couple of lined jacket patterns, mainly to see if my success was a fluke. Sunday Sevens / 7 2015. 1 I tried to eat well to speed my recovery.
Feathered Friend or Foe? | Making and Marking
http://makingandmarking.com/2015/06/08/feathered-friend-or-foe
Tales of a teacher learning to dressmake. Feathered Friend or Foe? Much of my sewing inspiration comes from seeing what others make, through magazines, blogs and Twitter. Some patterns appear time and again, and Simplicity 1609 is one of them. I’ve seen several particularly lovely versions recently courtesy of @sewdeputy. The bow needed a few bits of hand sewing which I didn’t mind too much although I’m not neat at all. From the front, however, it looked ok when it was done. As per the pattern, after sew...
Pick a Pattern or Two | Making and Marking

Tales of a teacher learning to dressmake. Pick a Pattern or Two. Whilst visiting Cardigan last week, and keeping my eyes open for a fabric shop – though resisting googling to find one for definite – we spotted something called The Eco Shop. It was like a charity shop but larger, cheaper, and more jumbled. Almost immediately I saw the box of sewing patterns, marked 30p each! Back at the cottage I carefully sorted through the patterns and tried to marry up the loose pieces. I think I’ve ended up ...That ma...
The Ups and Downs of My First Dahlia | Making and Marking
http://makingandmarking.com/2015/01/05/the-ups-and-downs-of-my-first-dahlia
Tales of a teacher learning to dressmake. The Ups and Downs of My First Dahlia. As it turned out, I used neither and opted for a cheap, plain blue jersey type fabric from ebay, 3 a metre. I wanted a fairly warm winter dress, which wouldn’t matter too much if it didn’t turn out well. Cutting out the pattern and the pieces took a while, as it does, but was smooth. The darts and gathers went into the bodice without problem. It was my first real attempt as using bias tape, and I was fairly happy with the nea...

Cleo clicked! – Red W Sews
https://redwsews.wordpress.com/2017/01/10/cleo-clicked
Adventures in dressmaking from a novice sewist. Middot; Sewing plans. January 10, 2017. Welcome to 2017; here’s hoping it’s a little easier on the nerves than last year was. Guess who was sewing impromptu patchwork sacks until well past bed time on Christmas Eve? Anyway, I also did a fair amount of internet browsing (of course! Particularly after the annual chest infection took hold. New pattern, of course, accounted for a fair number of the makes popping up on my Instagram feed and, slowly, it grew on me.

Del's sewing stuff. Del’s other stuff. On a 30’s movie set. Setting a festive table for 1 or more. V8813 – old lady dress? Am faffing about this weekend, wishing the malodorous fumes from the outside painting would stop entering this tiny box as I don’t appreciate the corresponding headache. (Sorry for the whine.). Don’t let the new photo on the right confuse you! In my cyberspace sleuthing to see who’s done what with this pattern, saw some who wondered if it was an old lady dress. What do you think?

Adventures in dressmaking from a novice sewist. Selfless, sparkly sewing. December 25, 2016. So anyway, I’m trying to whizz through the rest of my makes so I can get to them because yes, it would be lovely if they were wearing new dresses at Christmas. Today’s make was one of those super speedy makes that I should have get around to a little earlier, but it’s done and I’m thrilled with it. So thrilled that I don’t want to hand it over! I cut a size L (plus the bodice length) and JUST got it out of 1m of ...

Adventures in dressmaking from a novice sewist. December 22, 2016. December 22, 2016. I’ve got another slightly festive make for you today. I didn’t actually think of it as festive until I wore it to work the day after I finished it (as you do! And one of my new colleagues commented that I was wearing my Christmas dress. Clearly they don’t know me well! Anyway, this dress was inspired by A Million Dresses. It’s the Kitschy Coo Lady Skater dress. I made it first. I re-drew the neckline slightly, leaving t...

Making and Living
Tuesday, January 27, 2015. It's been so long since I have posted anything here, I have been too busy with work, house building and family life. But, I have had some time here and there to sew. I have had a lot of fun recently making all sorts of things from dresses, skirts to a baby sleeping bag and hot-water-bottle covers (posts to follow). Here are the skirts I made. I used a really good free patten from StraightGrain. The fabric in the photo above is. The third skirt I made was for the girls cousin's ...

Making and Maturing – For the body of Christ at Green Pond Bible Chapel
For the body of Christ at Green Pond Bible Chapel. Christmas on a Sunday? December 23, 2016. Let me plead with you: worship Jesus with the gathered body of Christ on Christmas day. This year, as happens from time to time, Christmas falls on a Sunday. Here’s the raw truth: church attendance at most churches on Christmas day is much lower than normal. Why is this the case? I would like to offer a counter-cultural voice this year: make going to church on Christmas day a priority for your family. It’s hard e...

make do and mend
Make do and mend. My English life in France. Wednesday, January 22, 2014. AS you know, i quite enjoy making something for not a lot of money. I have quite a few recipes from the second world war, most of these are quite frugal with the ingrediants, but in this day and age, i think we all need to be quite clever with our store cupboard ingrediants. Here is a recipe which does just that, its very tasty and very cheap to make. 1/4 pound of meat. 1 cup of haricot beans. Wednesday, January 22, 2014. I the bas...

Making and Selling Doll Clothes and Bedding. There was an error in this gadget. Since I was a young girl I've liked to sew, for the last few years I have greatly improved on my techniques with sewing. I've made quilts and clothes for my kids and friends. Quilts are a lot of fun but very time consuming and I like to get things done so I can get on to the next project. My mind is always swimming with new and different ideas! Even doll dresses are in my repertoire. Go figure a doll sleeping bag! What happen...
