Making Strange

Making Strange is an expression used (at least in Canada) to describe the stage most babies go through where they begin to fear strangers and unfamilliar things. It can be described as that moment when they realise they as 'other' and not just an extension of someone else. Recently, I moved to another part of the world. This blog is about my process of 'making strange' - freaking out and eventually, hopefully, making sense of my surroundings.

Making Strange: May 2011

http://www.makingstrange.net/2011_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 22, 2011. PS: Yes, I know. The Disney frames were recolored to match the Royal Wedding kill joys. ;). It's Raining Again in Vancouver. Someone put foam in the fountain in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. We went for brunch and walked around a bit in the rain. I took a Benedryl and it made me feel drugged. Sigh. Brian Eno on Design. Friday, May 20, 2011. In my experience, the instruments and tools that endure (because they are loved by their users) have limited options. Brian Eno in Wired.

Making Strange: Where to find me

http://www.makingstrange.net/2012/02/where-to-find-me.html

Where to find me. Sunday, February 19, 2012. This little blog of mine has been with me since 2008 when I moved from Canada to Wales. It followed me to London, on an around the world trip and even to my current home in San Francisco. These days I feel like I've outgrown it a bit. I may be back, but for now it just doesn't feel like the right place to catalogue life stuff. You can find me on over at Ephemeralist. Where to find me. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Making Strange: About Me

http://www.makingstrange.net/2008/10/testing.html

Tuesday, October 7, 2008. In 2008 I moved from the Canadian prairies to the UK where I lived, mostly in London, until the spring of 2010. Then I spent a year traveling around the word, visiting places like Laos, Japan and Australia. While traveling, I founded Contentini. A boutique content strategy and web consultancy agency with my husband Dan. Now I live in San Francisco and work as a Content Strategist for Facebook, which is absolutely as cool as it sounds. I found this picture on Google:. Hi, Ami, I ...

The EmBot: August 2013

http://the-em-bot.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Saturday, 31 August 2013. For the second episode in a row, the Doctor is trying it on with a new woman. Despite losing Rose, and having being rebuffed by Donna, he immediately sees something he likes about Martha Jones. He's indefatigable. This is the best series opener so far. More ambitious than Rose. More accomplished than New Earth. It has key advantages over both of them. Unlike Rose. The audience is fully acquainted with the show and completely comfortable with the Doctor. Unlike New Earth. Maybe w...

The EmBot: The Name of the Doctor

http://the-em-bot.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-name-of-doctor.html

Friday, 22 November 2013. The Name of the Doctor. Immediately this feels like something very special indeed. Still months (or hours) away from the 50th Anniversary, we are unexpectedly treated to a montage of previous Doctors, the highlight of which is seeing the First Doctor in the process of stealing himself a TARDIS. The significance couldn't be clearer: this is a story that started, as the caption reminds us, a very long time ago. When we started re-watching these new episodes with Rose. Jenny's fear...

I'm such a proud mom. 5 The animations of the houses falling apart on "Massive Moves". Hilarious. 7 Hell's Gate lager. A cheap beer that tastes good. Links to this post.

Sunday, 5 May 2013. And My Bird Can Sing. For a few weeks now there has been a bird sitting in the tree in my garden. It is visually unremarkable - brown, medium-sized - but it makes the most incredible noise, whistling and shouting for hours at a time. It's not birdsong so much as a weird incongruous collection of sounds, a sort of Space Invaders Tourettes: it seems compelled to pour forth, incessantly. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Abigail's Road to Nowhere. Jan 31, 2013. 1 Quit biting my nails already, for Christ's sakes. They are hideous and it's a disgusting life long habit that needs to be broken. 2 Quit getting fatter, and start getting skinnier. 3 Buy a bathing suit. The see-through one that hangs down to your ankles when it gets wet, just ain't going to cut it if you want to try accomplish #2 up there. 4 Take better care of my hair. It's finally long, let's keep it that way. 5 Quit pulling out my eyebrow hairs when I'm bored.

Abigail's Road to Nowhere. Jan 21, 2013. Wish You Were Here. I will never forget him telling me about a month before he passed away that he wished he could do it all over again, and "do it right this time". That one sentence has changed how I now live my life. I know there are no do-overs, and there is never enough time to start over, you've got to get it as right as you can the first time around. So, happy birthday, Dad. Wish you were here.
