Making Thought — What computers can't do
http://makingthought.com/post/111983550589/what-computers-cant-do
Thoughts about making things; thoughts about making thoughts. February 24, 2015. What computers can’t do. We are creative, imaginative. We are pattern spotters who process enormous quantities of data without even noticing. We extrapolate, theorise, and guess our way to making sense of the world around us. These are incredible achievements. Computers are also great. They do exactly what you program them to do. They are utterly rational. However computers are not great humans. That is an absurd example, bu...

Whether its learning to play a musical instrument or speak another language, one often hears the refrain, ‘I wish I’d learned to do X when I was younger’. The age of their brain has nothing to do with it. French. Meet the people, explore the ideas and the culture that the language holds. Learn a little bit of it each day. March 4, 2015.

Thoughts about making things; thoughts about making thoughts. Posts tagged with ‘learning’. March 3, 2015. Rote and Imaginative learning strategies. Much ill is spoken of ‘rote’ learning. Everyone seems to agree that it is a bad idea. Oddly though, I’ve never really got a clear sense of rote learning actually *is*, and therefore why it is bad, and what might be a better strategy. For example an ideal memory of the word for 'cat’ in Spanish would be one that allowed you to effortlessly recall the wo...

Thoughts about making things; thoughts about making thoughts. Posts tagged with ‘languages’. March 4, 2015. Developing a new sense. Imagine a woman who has worn a blindfold all her life. Her eyes are perfectly formed, but have never been used. When she is 20 years old, she removes the blindfold. Not in any meaningful sense, no. Not at once. Her brain needs to learn to process the information first, to make sense of the new sensory input it is getting. Will it be difficult to learn? Of course it will.

Progenitor Cell, Quick Notes
http://progenitorcell.tumblr.com/post/11684679004/quick-notes
Yesterday I was successful with my experiment that I had a bad start with on Tuesday. One thing I changed was that I was more patient. Coming from using Engineering software, I usually don’t have to worry about doing something wrong because I can always redo it. When you are working with physical materials that take a lot of time to prepare (and may be expensive) this is not the case, so I must be more patient! I was very careful with the eye dissection and followed my supervisors directions closely.
Progenitor Cell, Memory Challenge
http://progenitorcell.tumblr.com/post/11685018068/memory-challenge
This may be more true for technical fields than others, but whenever starting a new job it’s hard to find and remember where everything is! Even in computer engineering you have to remember the locations of important files on a linux system. This is especially difficult when I don’t have intuition in this case since I hadn’t worked in a bio lab until now. Where are the antibodies? Where do I put the mice bodies and severed heads, and where is the bag for that? Posted 4 years ago.

This Too Shall Pass
This Too Shall Pass. Thursday, April 26, 2012. This five-minute piece is what became of the longest dream of Eve which we get to see, except in the actual short film it is shortened down immensely. Eve's Dream was a collaboration with some WAAPA student where Emily Bowman choreographed this experimental performance. Thursday, April 5, 2012. This Too Shall Pass. A short dance film emerged as well from one of the lengthier dreams, simply titled Eve's Dream. Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Tuesday, May 3, 2011.

Here’s the (Sc)rub…. In video editing, a “scrub” is a (sometimes lightning fast) review of raw video footage. A good “scrub” provides an editor (who likely did not shot the raw video footage) with a sense of time, place, and purpose…and starts the editor out on the right path to answer the questions:. What happened…where and when? Who acted, who reacted? How is the story best told? Common sense, right? But the scrub concept could become an even more precise tool in your communications kit if you bring al...

Making This Up as I Go. Adventures as a writer, a homeschooler, and a human being. It’s August. Homeschool mamas, I know what some of you are thinking. You are wondering if you are enough. Are you smart enough to own your children’s educations rather than delegate them to professionals? Are you organized enough to juggle all the curricula, the competing demands of multiple ages, and the laundry? Are you strong enough, have you researched enough, do you have enough money? You don’t need to keep up with an...
