Plus jim's thoughts for the time. Just a quick reflection of the hikoi. I have been more tired today than I expectected. There was a host of things to think on while we paddled or rested on remote beaches: Reading historical journals (of Bishop Selwyn in particular); the environment – splendid, beautiful; and scared by humans, and the indigenous wildlife – playing with dolphins a real highlight. Cleave to one another. Kayaking demands ‘rafting up’ (coming alongside each other and holding ...Fill in your ...

Plus jim's thoughts for the time. Hole in a rock. Saint Nicholas’ Day and one full of gifts. We made it into the Bay of Islands, through the ‘Hole in the Rock,’ paddled with a dolphin, saw Orcas (we were so wishing they would come see us), had coffee (we were invited onto to the yacht Matrix by skipper Noel Vautier), had our last dehydrated meal, and Rangihoua and Oihi are in striking distance for noon tomorrow. December 6, 2014. Anyway, we decided to proceed gently and see how were going. John was f...

Plus jim's thoughts for the time. I did not imagine that I my first blog post for 2015 would include reference to the 39 Articles. Nor did I ever imagine that I would write a blog that made reference to the 1981 Soft Cell hit Tainted Love. (If you don’t know the song, it is delight and I’ll leave Google to lead you to it). The Right Reverend Libby Lane is now a bishop! Congrats to her and to all who have worked hard and long for the day. Tainted love, Don’t touch me please. The place to start is with the...

Plus jim's thoughts for the time. I have been waiting for some inspiration for a last blog of this calendar year. Thanks to those who have read during the last year; special thanks to those who have commented here or on Facebook. RS Thomas’ poem ‘Kneeling,’ a favourite, feels particularly apposite. Moments of great calm,. Kneeling before an altar. Of wood in a stone church. In summer, waiting for the God. To speak; the air a staircase. For silence; the sun’s light. Ringing me, as though I acted. The enco...

Plus jim's thoughts for the time. All saints, honiara. I am three today. Three years on in a new identity bishop. A friend gave me a lovely bottle of wine. I’ll save it for a couple more years; it needs to mellow some. Me too. I looked back through some photos and I have been part of some wonderful moments as a result of being ‘in the pink.’ Confirmations stand out. Many moments for which I gave thanks to God, and thanks to colleagues/ the people of God. October 29, 2014. Welcome into the house, our home.

An evangelical ponders mysteries old and new . though apparently new mysteries are old ones in disguise. Cracking Open Sunday's Sermon. Hermeneutics and Human Dignity. Monday, May 11, 2015. Loving and caring relationships recognised and cherished in a culture of difference? Was it one of our Kiwi bishops? One of the more trendy CofE bishops? An African bishop speaking anonymously? Some avant-garde Anglican blogger? Of the Archbishop's address here. Secondly, if a leading Catholic episcopal leader can be ...

Tena koutou, Tena koutou, Tena koutou. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. France from bottom to top. I last wrote after catching the train south about 350km from Paris to Poitiers. I stayed next to the station but climbed the hill to the interesting town mainly for dinner. On Sunday morning I travelled still further south (about 450 km) changing trains at Bordeaux and Toulouse and finally meeting Malcolm at the nearest station to his home in Cordes sur Ciel. And next is the town gate from their front door. Then th...

Tena koutou, Tena koutou, Tena koutou. Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Overnight Train Travel (Part 1 1954? I have just read http:/ www.theguardian.com/world/2014/sep/12/europe-night-trains-sleeper-service. That overnight trains are to be discontinued in much of Western Europe next year. This is disappointing as I had hoped to travel on the night train from Paris to Munich next May. I love overnight train travel and began to reminisce about my experiences. We travelled in the Central West Daylight Express.

As I mentioned in my last report I was very lucky to gain a lift from some people who lived near the ferry wharf at Anacortes so managed to overcome the problems with Amtrak and reach Friday Harbor on the San Juan islands late in the evening. Near the English Camp is Mount Young, 650 feet (200 metres) high and I climbed up and took photos. Then one of the Seattle skyline.

In 2006 I had the privilege of riding up Alp d’Huez to see Frank Schleck take the win in a sprint from Damiano Cunego. I wore my special T-Mobile shirt Anya Gous.
