Vienna boasts one of the worlds richest and most influential culinary traditions and none more so than at the beating heart of patisserie (something that I should like to explore in more detail at another time).

Having resigned myself to the prospective onset of winter (with its long dark mornings and even longer, darker nights), it was uplifting to say the least to be woken this morning by bright sunshine pouring through the windows and dancing on the pond below. I had a whole blissful day to myself ahead of me and with Autumn’s flare as my guide, off I went to find the nearest pumpkin patch. Vast 60’s shed round the back of a train station. Sad really....

A colleague whom I have loved working with has been gone almost since school started, and I knew that she was unexpectedly quite sick and would be out for a while. I've sent her a couple "thinking of you" texts and just kept expecting to see her back at school any day. And then we, her friends, can't even help out by bringing her meals and taking her to appointments! At times like this I feel so powerless and sad.

On the coffee machine at school given to the teachers by parents: "Break (meaning not allowed to use it) from 8:30 am (20 minutes before 1st period) until end of last class (almost 5 pm)". Uh, yeah.
