We call it goatmeal round these parts, and here's how I make it. 1 cup oatmeal (I think mine is the quick-cooking variety). 2 cups milk (I use 1 c. soy milk and 1 c. almond milk, but you're welcome to use dairy, or even goat's milk! 1/4 c dried cranberries. 1/4 t ground ginger. 1/4 t vanilla extract. Meals made with mama-love. Monday, August 10, 2015. Oven's maiden voyage: roasted taters. What could be better than digging potatoes yourself and then blessing them with a roasting in your new oven? Once we finally figured out how to get our oven off "demo" mode (it had been the floor model so it was on that special non-cooking mode- we had to call the appliance shop and they didn't know either, then had to research and call us back), we could then roast those taters. Simple, really: dig and cook.

Cooked rice in the rice cooker and made it into a bowl-bed for these lovelies to rest on. Mixed canned tuna with leftover homemade tartar sauce and cold cooked peas. Tuesday, December 7, 2010. In my attempt to do some pre-Christmassy things this year, I decided to start with the ABC's. The letter "E" became "Make Egg Nog" day. Ryu doesn't care for really thick or sweet egg nog. We are tea totalers (sp? 2 eggs beaten well (Why couldn't you use an egg product that is.pasteurized? If you were worried? 3 Tbs sugar (I wouldn't have minded a full 1/4 cup = 4 Tbs.). 1 tsp vanilla (We could have upped this too. Yum! 1/8 tsp. nutmeg, ground. 2 1/3 cups milk. I LOVE egg nog!

So, when I was offered a nice cold glass of barley tea.I suddenly wasn't all that thirsty after all. Friday, May 14, 2010. My friend, Abigail. And I were always trying to find frosting recipes that didn't take powdered sugar, in Japan. Even after I learned "how" to make powdered sugar, I never wanted to use Ryu's. Coffee grinder that long to grind enough for frosting. Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Are the Brownies Done? Now that I am back living in the land of cheap ($.99) brownie mixes (on sale, anyway), being able to tell when the brownies are done properly has become a rather important skill. Really! The first batches of brownies I made were.really pretty raw. I'd leave them out on the counter to dry them out before finishing them. They lasted forever. Then there was the batch I overcooked. What a sad way to DESTROY chocolate! Mixes say to not over bake!

I think that cookies are my favorite food in all the world. Not bar cookies. Individually baked ones. And I love to share them with other people. But, I was too cheap to buy sweetened condensed milk in Japan and had no idea where to find marshmallow fluff. And I certainly do NOT put REAL fudge in the "Kantan" (easy) category. Then, a few weeks ago our neighbor had a box of canned things they didn't need and asked if we could use. Yep! 2 Tbsp. butter. 2/3 cups undiluted Evaporated Milk. 1 1/2 cups sugar. 1/4 tsp. salt. 1/2 cup chopped nuts.

DIY Glass Bubble Chandelier. When we desired a new light to go over the dining table, I wasn’t thinking about. One Then I remembered designer Jean Pelle’s instructions to make a chandelier. A chandelier would be much nicer than our old light fixture. The original design for the chandelier used porcelain sockets and coiled string. We used galvanized pipe and IKEA. 18 4-inch glass bubble balls from CB2. 4 cord sets from IKEA. 20 gauge floral wire ($1). Galvanized electrical conduit and fittings ($12).

Friday, December 17, 2010. Peanut Butter Frosting - Broiled. Birthday Monday and I overheard him talking with Jun about what they both liked. He loves peanuts and said he also liked peanut butter. I had no idea! So, as we were going out for dinner to a Christmas party, I decided to make up the brownie mix I had in the cupboard and find a new frosting to celebrate at snack time. This is in Betty Crocker's. Cookbook from 1978. Can that really be 32 years AGO? Anyway, another great NO POWDERED SUGAR recipe!

Meals made with mama-love. Tuesday, April 3, 2018. Matthew goes to germany (in the kitchen, at least). Matthew is fascinated with the German language and culture! Though we topped it with a mango fruit sauce and not what they recommended (berry sauce or lemon juice). Matthew loves anything mango! The full meal: Rosti potato pancakes (we cheated by not grating the potatoes ourselves- we bought a packet of ready-to-cook Swiss Rosti from Costco! And don't forget the Bavarian cream.
