History Of The Charity. The MAMIE MARTIN FUND. Was founded in 1993 by Margaret and John Sinclair in memory of Margaret’s mother, Mamie, who worked to empower women and girls through education in 1920s Malawi. Lynsey is a recent Mathematics graduate from Heriot-Watt University. She first became involved with the Mamie Martin Fund in 2008 when she visited Bandawe Girls Secondary School as part of an educational trip with Falkirk High School. What Mamie Martin Do…. The Mamie Martin Fund. Supports the secondary education of girls in schools run by the Synod of Livingstonia in Northern Malawi. Fees raised by supporters of the Fund are used to provide school fees for girls who have gained a place at a Synod school, but who cannot afford the fees. After many years of discussion, we finally applied for and were granted status as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation, or SCIO, by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. Where do we help? The Mamie Martin Fund currently supports 81 girls at 4 secondary schools in Northern Malawi. Today, while 27% of girls in Malawi enrol in secondary school only 13% actually attend. Only a fraction of that will finish school with only 5% passing their MSCE exam. Secondary education in Malawi is not free and many girls drop out due to financial hardship. The Mamie Martin Fund believes that no girl who has gained a place at secondary school should have to give it up because of poverty.
