A pretty lawn requires a lot of water and fertilizers and often pesticides. Xeriscaping with native plants saves water, chemicals, time, and money in the long term. I have removed a small corner of the front yard and made it into a native plant/ butterfly garden. The weed garden has spiderwort, wild violets, beautyberry, purslane, chickweed, sheep sorrel, plantain, wood sorrel, and wood betony. This hibiscus is partially rotten. It looks much better since being next to the mulch pile, but it’s too close to the gate and has to go. 20 minutes later with my Bahco Laplander folding saw…. I will be planting a native elderberry for medicine and yummy treats in the same vicinity, but not so close to the gate.
