Bryan's Blog: January 2011

Tuesday, January 25, 2011. O'Higgins was of Irish and Basque descent and he was the second Director of Chile from 1817-1823. He was born in Chillan, which is a little city that we spent one night in during our travels to Southern Chile. After walking around for a while, we headed off to my favorite part of the day (and one of the highlights for me of the entire three weeks in Chile): the pre-Columbian museum of art in Santiago! I have to say that when I found out that Santiago had a pre-Columbian museum ...

Saturday, July 28, 2012. My Host Family and Scenes of Merida. For the three weeks that we had class in Merida (yes, in the state of Yucatan), I was placed (as all other Level II and Level III students were) in a host family's home. Generally, my stay with Dona Hortensia and her grandson Felix Antonio was great. The food was also pretty scrumptious and I was so thankful to be the only student with air-conditioning (and it was in my bedroom! Posted by BryanSchaeffer.blogspot.com. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Bryan's Blog: August 2012

Wednesday, August 8, 2012. The terrain may be flat, but the jungle is dense and makes it difficult to see anything but the trees (because there is really nothing else to see! I had waited almost three years to come here to Mayapan, and I finally got here. There were two people at Mayapan not with our group so we basically had the site all to ourselves. It fascinates me that so many tourists only go to places like Chichen Itza (with good reason! Posted by BryanSchaeffer.blogspot.com. Tricia Davis and Fam.

Sunday, February 27, 2011. Our first stop in Pucon was these waterfalls. It was a nice introduction to the splendor of Pucon. When we arrived, we couldn't really see the volcano, but the next morning it was such a glorious day so we were able to see everything! Pucon is just spectacular. In the six days that we spent here, we did so many things! We went 'canopying,' or 'zip-lining' through the forests of Pucon. That was quite the adventure! With all of that natural beauty around! The ten year old brother...

Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Santiago Atitlan and Maximon. Oh, Santiago Atitlan! How I miss your beautiful location and landscape. This place is truly one of my favorite Maya towns of all time! What a lovely place to visit. And here are a few pictures for which you have all been waiting! I felt a little weird meeting him (or even writing that I "met" him), but the people who do believe in him have so much faith in him that it astounds me. Posted by BryanSchaeffer.blogspot.com. Sunday, June 24, 2012. Excursion 1: San Jose Oriente, Kimbila, and Izamal. Again, I do not understand this new blogging template because my pictures are out of order! The first four pictures are of these three boys (somehow related to Ismael, but I'm not sure exactly how) with whom John and I played for about an hour. While everyone else was enjoying Ismael's aunt's cooking (and the several fans in the room), John and I became friends with Alejandro, Isidoro, and the third kid's name (lol! And they were ...

Saturday, April 30, 2011. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was really excited to go the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York because everyone was telling me that it's just a great museum with so much artwork! And that is an understatement. The building itself is absolutely enormous. There was no way we were going to be able to see everything that we wanted to in one day (or two, or three days! It was a lot to take in but so worth it! Bryan's Blog: Quirigua
http://bryanschaeffer.blogspot.com/2013/09/quirigua.html
Wednesday, September 18, 2013. Quirigua's independence was thereby established. In one of these pictures I am standing next to the tallest stone monument of the New World. A double-sided stela that is so tall and a wonder to behold and observe. The tree to the right in this photo, without a lot of foliage, is a ceiba tree, which is the cosmic world tree, a sacred and highly significant tree for the ancient Maya. Here is the modern-day walkway that leads to the central ceremonial plaza of Quirigua.
