cybercrofter: March 2015
http://cybercrofter.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Life on a coastal croft in the northwest Highlands of Scotland. Monday, 30 March 2015. Here's our lovely new boat, but what should we paint the red and the white bits with? And just at the moment, one of the hot topics is how to stop the wildlife moving in on the bottom of the boat: what toxic blend to smear all over the hull, how thickly, how often and at what cost. I dread to think what the cumulative impact of all these paints is on the world’s marine life. And was there anything at all stopping the m...

Life on a coastal croft in the northwest Highlands of Scotland. Tuesday, 17 June 2014. I inhabit a paradox. As a writer, I want vast quantities of paper to come pouring off the presses with my words on it, but as a campaigner for forests and the people who depend on them, I want the paper industry to stop trashing forests. This paradox has driven my obsession with paper for years. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View from the top of the croft. Assynt, Highlands of Scotland, United Kingdom.

Life on a coastal croft in the northwest Highlands of Scotland. Wednesday, 22 October 2014. I'm back home after a trip to the USA and China. It was rich with thought-provoking discussions and meetings with delightful people but punctuated by gruelling travel with frustrating delays. I am so glad to be home. It is wild, wet, windy and wonderful here, the air soft and fresh, trees dancing, water everywhere entrancing. I am rahayu. A raven swings and rolls. Of light and flow. All we need to know. Awesome In...

cybercrofter: Preparing to die
http://cybercrofter.blogspot.com/2015/04/preparing-to-die.html
Life on a coastal croft in the northwest Highlands of Scotland. Saturday, 25 April 2015. It has been an odd period recently. A funeral. An ancient ceremonial walk. A cave. A camp. Huge tides. At High Pasture I placed them in the spot we decided to use as a fireplace, and then we clambered down into the cave. It’s one of the most beautiful places I know. Pure magic: dark but dazzling, pristine yet mysterious. I heard today of the death of Marjorie, my Godfather’s mother, at the amazing age of 106...

Life on a coastal croft in the northwest Highlands of Scotland. Saturday, 11 April 2015. Are you afraid of death or afraid of chaos? When I was a creative writing student at Glasgow University, a decade ago, one of our most memorable workshops was with Janice Galloway. I remember her saying something along the following lines.
