I’m pretty useless at making a good pompom for a hat, so I’m knitting curlicues instead. A bunch of knitted curlicues can look pretty good on the top of a woolly hat. The decision was made when I photographed my version of the Ba-able Hat on a snowy morning. I thought the pompom looked a bit pathetic. Our wool comes from the Maniototo area of Central Otago the hottest, coldest and driest region in New Zealand, and also the farthest inland. The fleeces chosen for Maniototo wool are selected from sheep bred from Merino rams and Romney ewes and are farmed by the Duncan family. The sheep are shorn in August each year.
