I greatly enjoyed the critical readings this week, particularly one moment in the Haslett and the entirety of the Farrell. I also loved the Pope, though I always do. I’ll begin with a thought that had already been brewing for me which Haslett found a wonderful articulation for. Reading the Kramnick, and thinking of Pope as against emergent systems of credit and the new importance of money, I thought what a hypocrite!

Taken together they seem to manifest some form of underlying tension. Eger helps to explain it somewhat, but I’m not sure I’ve puzzled out exactly what is going on, so I’ll present it to my astute readers for help and consideration.
